I just finished swapping engines for one that works better than the last one. I combined parts on both of the engines so as to get a more complete one. I now have an oil cooler support bar that goes over the end of the oil cooler and bolts to the fan housing. However, it appears to be touching the mustache bar (I am using the mustache bar that came with the newer engine, but using the old fan housing). Is that correct? The engine is from a '77 westy (or so) and going on to a '74 bus. Is it important to keep it on there? Should I shave off the part that is touching the mustache bar?
Also, I started the bus for the first time tonight with the new engine in. Is the sound that it is making good? Or is there something particularly wrong? I am guessing that I need to do a valve adjustment.

The oil cooler thing is upside down. Or, maybe mine is.
No, the sound that it is making is not good. A valve adjustment is a good place to start. |

| Your oil cooler support bracket is upside down, should mount to the upper hole on the fan shroud. |

Thanks for the replies! It is weird because I am sure that is how the oil cooler support bracket was setup when I got the engine.
Is it easy to get the bracket off without too much difficulty? Does anyone have a picture of what the proper bracket position looks like? (I wasn't able to find a picture in the gallery).
As an aside, here is the video of the first running of the bus!!!

Don't always assume that a PO got it right
The bracket only fits 2 ways, remove both bolts, carefully pry the clamp open a bit without jabbing the cooler and flip it over so the bracket with the wow is at the top. Good pics in the Bentley. |

I was able to flip the bracket! I couldn't find any pictures of the bracket in the Bentley, but I did see a picture in the Wilson book on pg. 149.
I know this isn't the right place for it, and I am just venting, but adjusting the valves is a pain - I have already buggered things up. I should have just paid the $30 to have Dave at Vintage German Motors do the adjustment for me. /vent
I just read the Bentley's description on how to adjust the valves so I will try that next. Sorry for my whining!
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions! |
