View original topic: center side window seal clarification

I'm finding confusing info on the center side windows. I need to order new seals to install Rivi sliders. Now, they use the standard window seal, I understand.
However, some places list this seal to be identical to the rear side window. For example, here it is listed as a standalone on oeveedub:
http://www.oeveedub.com/vw/bus-window-seals/221-845-321A.html

And then, there is this link with a different part number that says they are one of the same:
http://www.oeveedub.com/vw/bus-window-seals/221-845-321B.html

CIP1 does not list the grooveless center side window seal at all, but it lists one with trim groove. As I will be ordering from them this time(bus depot is back ordered until December and I need to order parts from CIP anyway), I need to confirm that the back side seal indeed will fit. :?

Anybody can confirm?

That's news to me, the full rear sides are slightly different length compared to the full middle sides by a couple of inches AFAIK.

Edit: I see CIP is not even listing them as out of stock, but WW say they have them:

I've ran across the info before(that rear side can be used for center side) but not very often. If those two seals were interchangeable , why would there be a need for a separate part? :?
Reason I was going with CIP next is that shipping is free and quick and their price would be CAD$35 so the same as others... but they are not listing the one without the trim.
I will check out WW.

I had the same question and i talked to jbugs and they said that thr rear side window and the middle window use the same seal. i mocked up the rear seal to the middle and it looks like it will fit. So for middle slider windows you use the standard middle seal

I just phoned CIP and they say the rear side does work, as it stretches to fit the center window. *sigh*...

I understand the first part but I'm confused by the last sentence there, are you saying the rear side will work for the slider or to use the "real" center seal?

The choice I have is get the rear side seals from CIP free shipping and same price as WW with the rest of the parts or get "real" center seals from WW and pay for extra shipping which will end up being about %50 more for the seals. :?

Well jbugs told me that the rear seal will work for the middle windows. Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks. I'm thinking I might order 2 back side ones and if it does not work out, I can use one of them(the one not stretched from trying) on the one ventless back side window I have, and order new ones for centers.

Call Richard at OeVeeDub and tell him what you want to do. We got all our window seals there and we couldn't be more pleased.

Well, OEVEEDUB has the side ones alone in stock as well as side rear ones. It's CIP that does not even stock them. My dilemma is should I order from CIP that is local to me so the shipping would be free or should I pay extra for "real" center side seals from OE or anybody else in US.

The seals are the same - and we have them in stock. More coming from Germany at the end of the month, too!

You know how the saying goes - you get what you pay for (and we cut our margins to the bone to try and keep them low). I will tell you that we have sold seals to people that have already paid for seals from other suppliers that were totally wrong and wouldn't take them back because they were "used" after they tried and tried to install them. So it cost them a LOT more. :D

Yes, there is THAT difference as the local ones are not German and sure as hell $30 or so difference would not be worth the grief of trying to install 2 windows with PITA seals. Do you have any experience with these going on Riviera sliders? That's what they will be going onto.

greggearhead Tue Nov 03, 2009 4:21 pm

I do not - I have heard that they are "tight" so might be a really good idea to warm the seals prior to installing so they are more pliable and keep a hair dryer close and an extra set of hands.

I bought a panel van so I don't have to deal with as many window seals. Heh.

I think you are going to discover the Riviera window is not a standard VW item and was produced by a company in Oregon. The standard VW seal won't fit. See if your window has a bunch of screws around the inside frame. If it does, take the screws out and the frames should separate leaving a SQUARE seal behind. The VW seal looks like a mineature windshield seal with a groove for the body and a groove for the glass. I think you are going to have to look around in conversion van places for your seal.
