I am going to remove the engine for the first time (1970 bug) today. I have watched the bug me videos and read the bentley book. Have all the tools I need just need to know any problems I might run into kind of nervious do not want to tear anything up.

Just take your time. It is all about the details. Remembering to disconnect the throttle cable, remembering to disconnect heater cables. Just follow a step by step list and don't skip anything, and you will be fine.
You get into trouble when you start to get excited and rush things.

This is probably the most likely thing that you'll forget. I've dropped my engine twice and both times I forget to disconnect those even after I told myself I wouldn't #-o

That is why I follow something like this: http://www.type2.com/library/engineg/kuhn7.htm

It takes the "me" out of the equation and I just follow the steps.

Like the others guys said take your time and keep things organized.
I read through the Bentley book then started in, if I got to a point I was unsure I would stop and drink a beer and read through the steps I was on. (Doing this too often really slows down progress, but improves knowledge to a point that you know more about bugs than Bentley ever dreamed)
I bought a nice creeper that made some part af the project much less painful.

A golf tee, or a golf tee and a small length of fuel line are great for capping the fuel line before removing the engine. I will repeat: remove a battery cable, and MARK all the wires you take off.

For re-installation, feed through from underneath the accelerator cable through the tube in the fan shroud (put a hose clamp on that tube's front side to hold that guide tube in place).

Lable EVERYTHING and lower it slowly because stuff tends to get hung up and rip off as you lower it.

So... is it out?

just pulled my first air cooled engine couple weekends ago. It went really easy. Be like Santa Clause - make a list and check it twice. Before you jack it (the engine) sweep over it a couple of times making sure everything is free and clear. Take out the bottom nuts first. Get the jack under there to support the engine. Then the bolt on the driver's side at top. Finally, remove the nut behind the dog house. Then sing the wiggle song to yourself :"wiggle it, just a little bit" and give a little pull.

I found I had a bugger of a time getting the clutch past the input shaft and bell housing and then getting the tin caught up on the rubber at the sides of the engine bay. Just go slow and keep wiggling - she'll come.

Are you planning on sliding it out the side with a tire off or yankin' 'er out the back?

Glenn yes got it out no problems at all. It took about 1 hour I went really slow and labled everthing. Thanks to everyone for your help. Now time to clean her up and put her back in.
