Hello gang... :!:

I'm trying tu figure out the best way tu pull the engine out of my 1975 bus.

My van is equiped with an automatic transmission, is it possible to remove the engine ONLY without the transmission.

If so...what is the better procedure to do so.

Thank you.

Jacques

It is possible to drop the engine and not the trans but a little harder.

ratwell has a very nice article for dropping a type 4 that helped me my first time.

Yes the automatic makes it slightly different, but it's by far easier to pull the engine and transmission as a unit rather than one or the other. Search the forum, there are plenty of how to's posted alrteady about pulling the engine and tranny out of an automatic. IF you get stuck, refer to your Bentley manual.

... I prefer to take the engine out separately when the bus is automatic equipped. There is not a long input shaft to deal with, the engine only has to move away from the bellhousing an inch or two to clear. There is an opening in the top of the engine case to access the torque converter to driveplate bolts. Just be careful not to let the converter fall away from the trans to the ground as the engine is separated from the bellhousing.

(how can the removal of the engine only be harder than removing the engine/transaxle as a unit? All the extra wrenching and the weight? I never have understood that)

I pulled mine with the auto transmission at the recommendation the Samba members. I'm glad I did - it wasn't too bad at all.

Do you have a Bentley manual? I just used Ratwells write-up and glanced at the bentley to spot difference with the auto. Things to keep in mind:
1)you'll need a special triple square bit to undo the CV joints (some of mine were the triple square and some were allen head ... wierd PO mixing, I'm guessing)
2)remember, when separating the engine from the transmission, to unbolt the pressure plate from the torque converter

Good luck with it!

It is easy to pull the motor alone, don't pull the auto trans with it. pull off your front tin unbolt the tork converter ,unbolt the motor, slide motor cycle jack under and pull back. It will come right out. If you want ,take off the bumper.
