| It's my first VW I just pulled the engine to re do the fuel tank sending unit fuel lines and figured I'll throw in some new brake lines while I'm at it. Anyone have any advice on anything else I should replace while I have the engine out? It's a 68 transporter by the way and has been sitting for at least 25 years. |

when i pull the engine i do fuel lines, injector lines, and all seals, it just takes a few more hours to get the seals done. oil filler seal oil presure, front main, rear main. valve covers . distributer. also take a look at ratwell he gives u all the best info with pics. better than a bently!

| He has an early bay, most of that does not apply. Oil cooler seals for sure. Front engine seal. Stuff you can't get to when it is in. |

Metal parts don't care if they set for 25 years. But anything rubber or plastic does. With the engine out, totally clean and inspect everything that you can see while you are sitting down in the hole. Also go thru the scheduled maintenance section in your service manual. Now is the time to clean and lube the CV's and put on new boots. At the same time service the rear wheel bearings and while that's apart go thru the rear brakes. Probably want to put in new cylinders. With the engine out now is the opportunity to replace the rear shift rod bushing and maybe the rear coupler if you remove the trans. But with the engine out and CV's unbolted the trans is practically unattached anyway.
That's not mentioning about the engine but after all this time you need to super clean and rebuild the carb amongst other things. |

take the tank to a radiator shop to get it cleaned and sealed with some thing like red kote.

I agree with getting your gastank sealed.
I also replaced the battery trays while it was out, painted the engine compartment and removed the spare tire well.
