Does anyone know whether VW painted their brake drums or were they bare steel?
I'm restoring a 75 Super, and wish to make it as stock as I can. It may or may not have its original drums. They are now rusty, so not sure if there was ever paint on them.
How about the control arms and steering knuckles? Also unpainted steel?

Yes. Knucles and all steering components are painted. |

This was discussed awhile ago. I think the claim was that they weren't painted originally. Others say not to paint because of heat build up due to the extra layer of paint. I have painted my drums, not a thick coat, the silver colour of the wheels and it looks fine and have never noticed any decreased braking capacity. This could turn into another slog about "to paint or not to paint".
BTW, great to see another La Grande being saved! |
