Hello,

I was considering installing an external oil cooler in my 1300, but was told by a vw enthusiast that it is not neccesary.

I am wondering-I don't want to start a discussion about which is better.

But.. Do you have actual temperatures of the stock oil cooler versus an external one? What I mean to determine is, does an external oil cooler actually damage the engine because it is not as efficient as stock?

Thanks!

If your engine is stock an external cooler is an absolute waste of money. Incorrectly sized coolers can over/under cool your oil. Colder is not always better and hotter certainly is not. My personal 2110 is using the stock cooler and I rarely see temps over 200 which is fine in my book.
190-220 is more than acceptable imho. Your money would be better spent ensuring you have all the correct bits in your cooling system and they are functioning correctly. Good luck

Thanks! That's what I thought. If they worked OK in Africa, they should be OK where I live.
