From the various pics that have been posted, it looks like some of the SB have all black dash boards, while others have the wonderful world of fake wood laminate strune across the dash....
My question is...for those who have/had fake wood grain, what have you done to eliminate it from the car? Paint? Etc? Would love to see pictures.
Needless to say, I am trying to figure out what to do with my woodgrain.
Thanks

Peel it off using a heat gun or hair drier to soften the glue. Clean the glue off with adhesive remover.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, personally I like the dash of my '79. Nothing tacky about it!

If you want to get ride of the woodgrain, buy replacement dash pieces in the classifieds. Swap everything out and then sell off your woodgrain. Someone will want it. I have a '73 Super with the black dash and I purchased a vintage woodgrain kit for it and it will be getting the 5.5X15 Sport wheels as well. Both are correct add ons for the year.

I had a 66 that I bought with wood grain on it. Was this something original then? I always thought the PO did it. I didn't mind it and it matched the wood shifter and knobs.

No, that's shelf paper. I think that was applied to take your eyes off that that gaping air-conditioning vent installed in the middle of your dash

When I answered your initial question I was thinking 71-72 Super Beetle with the "formula vee" stick on wood grain on the glovebox & grills. If you mean '73 + I too would recommend replacing it with good used black grained parts if that's what you want.

Ok, so tacky is not the right word...my bad.
Thanks for the pictures, the wood graining shown made me take a second look at mine. After removing the trip pieces, I could see where one of the PO's used good old wood grained shelving paper to cover up what was a pretty beaten up and cracked original wood grain panel....
See how bad two of the pieces are, I guess thier is no need to keep pulling the shelf paper off. Time to search the classifieds....
I was thinking of paint matching the inserts to match the body color. My fiances owns a PT Crusier RT 66 Edition and I am realy starting to like the various body color pieces on her dash. Has any one color matched the trim pieces and not the entire dash? Would love to see pics?
Thanks
