Hi guys, this is probably a really stupid question...I've developed an oil leak at some point after adjusting my valves. No oil on the ground but a small drip must be getting on some part of the exhaust because when I stop I can smell burning oil for a few minutes. I need to jack it up and give it a good look.
My question is, when I did the valve adjustment the oil was drained. Do I need to drain the oil again before I remove the valve covers so I don't get poured on? I'm just not sure since this is my first flat-4. Thanks!

| To do the valves the engine has to be cold. Very little oil will drip out when you remove the valve covers. |

I jack each side of the car up a little (jack under the end of the rear torsion tube) before removing the cover on that side. The resulting tilt makes that little bit of oil flow away from the valve cover. No drips.
Plus it's easier to get my body under there to work.

| Also lay a small rag along the heater box under the head to catch any residual oil. |
