Got a lead on one locally here for $1000. Waiting for a call back. Has issues, but that is all I know. I don't have the room but may have to buy it. I can't even finish the one I am working on. :D

Hey Ice Racer!
That would be a great score, plenty of room for maintenance and repair but no room to keep it...LOL. I'm just north of you in Green Bay. When I had too many vehicles and absolutely zero off street parking I would keep a van at work. First I took one to work and left it, next day drive the other and leave that and drive the first one home. Keep switching off, I did this for months. The same vehicle sitting in the same place--getting dusty, weeds growing and litter accumulating under it attracts vultures.

If you need outside storage I have room. I've got 20 acres with no visibility from the road so it would be safe, Let me know.

Good idea GB guy. It is not a scam. My friend owns a repair shop here and the guy lives in his neighborhood and sent him an email wondering if he would want to buy it. He called me and I told him to have the guy call me. The guy sent pics over and they are a bit dark but I can see it is a full westy with the kitchen and it is a Syncro due to the gas filler area. No details on rust issues but I am sure it has it. Actually no details at all. The email only says "do you want to buy it for $1000+/-??? Got my fingers crossed. I will let you all know.

Thanks for the parking offer Jeff, I will keep you in mind. I have got to finish my Syncro project this winter come hell or high water. It will be 2 yrs come March and I want it on the road for next yr. This could slow me down.

Picked up the 87 Syncro today. Paid $900. I would say it has major rust issues. Someone did some crappy bodywork to it in the past. Does not run. PO bought it in 2002 and told me he may have put on 1000 miles. Very dirty inside but it is all there including the kitchen etc.

Here is the weird part. It shows 73000 miles. He gave me the carfax from 2002 and it noted no od descrepancy and it showed 70000 miles in 1994 and 72000 in 2002. Came out of IL at some point. So now what? Drain the tank and see if I can get it to run? Or sell it as is and down the road with it?

Oh ya the tent is shot and the power sterring lines are rusted out and it looks like the steering rack was leaking. Would be a major project for someone. I will have to think on it for a bit of time.

Parts van?
There must be well over $900.00 worth of decent parts there.

Alaric.H Sun Nov 08, 2009 5:48 pm

Well if you put 20000 into it you still can get your money back.

funagon Sun Nov 08, 2009 7:30 pm

You should keep it for parts. All the drivetrain parts, front and rear differentials, engine and transmission cores, front axles/trailing arms/front brakes. Plus all the camper parts. Not to mention all the other regular vanagon parts that may become hard to find.

It was too good to pass up. 8)

Find a clean 2wd passenger van that is rust free and convert to a syncro westy!

HeftySmurf Sun Nov 08, 2009 8:35 pm

I want to see a picture or two

How hard is that to do?

Lots of labor, not lots of money.

$1000 parts westy syncro.

+$2000-4000 for a good 2WD van.

Throw in $1000 for other bits and pieces(new electric fridge, etc).

$1000 for a paint job.

Thats $5000-6000 plus LOTS of your time to convert it over, thats not counting things that would probably need to be done regardless like tires, brakes etc.

edgood1 Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:57 am

I'll second Sir Sam's comment... maybe not as bad as doing it the way we did it from what i've read (converting a syncro passenger van to pop top)

be prepared for a ton of work and loss of motivation at times.

iceracer has a lot of experience with these, he knows what hes getting into either way.

and yes, nice find!...it gives the rest of us hope that these deals are in fact out there.

$900 is well worth a spare syncro tranny on hand (iceracer -wanna sell it? 8) )
