My guess would be a bad accelerator pump or clogged piss tube...
I would clean/rebuild the carb to eliminate that as a problem.

I adjusted the valves and cleaned the condenser connection. Doesn't backfire anymore idles good but as soon as i give it more throttle it hesitates and seems as if the distributor is not advancing. I'm going to replace the condenser and points. But am wondering if the air correction jet which has broken off has anything to do with this?
Any help is appreciated..
Yes you need to replace it |

you referring to the carb or the condenser? |

Nice bug, enjoy.
I would say the engine dying may be something that's not the obvious - like the distributor. Check out the dist. thoroghly (rebuild it?) make sure the thing is correct and working perfectly. Then check out how the engine runs. Just my 2 lousy cents. Im probably wrong. 8) |

Hey thanks!
I've tried 2 other distributors and it does the same thing... It will idle fine and ive driven it around the block a couple times. If i pump the accelerator it will stay at higher RPM's but as soon as i hold the pedal down steady it bogs down.. |

| You'll find the problem. Any way you can try another carb? You may have to. What else have you considered? Oil pump? coil? damaged engine block/heads? Hmmm :?: :?: :?: |

| My first guess would be fuel delivery problem. Not just the pump but a blockage. Have you tried blowing out the fuel line with compressed air? |

Yes lines are all clear i blew them out twice with compressed air just to be sure... I just dont understand cuz nothing is blocked up in the carb everything is clear i have blown every passage way with compressed air. I guess the air correction jet does that much??
Is there a diagram that shows the flow of fuel and air through the 28 pci carb? I know there is one for my carb off my notch and it helps alot..
guess i gotta spring for a rebuilt carb
And hopefully tomorrow I will get some photos ive just been too preoccupied with trying to get it running. The few blocks i have driven it though have shocked me. It drives very nice and the steering is nice a tight. It's a very solid car, I would bet that its pretty low original miles although theres no way to prove it since the speedometer cable is broken. It hasn't been driven since 1971 though, and the floor mats are in great condition and there's not even a worn spot where your heel goes. Also the rubber on the pedals aren't very worn down at all.
Even better is the wiring 8) Never been touched, the fuse's even have the paper labels behind them telling you what each fuse is for
Besides wasting all my time trying to get it running I'm very happy with it :D |

Thanks man, hopefully its running soon..
I put on a different carb and distributor both off a running engine and it runs good now, getting enough fuel and advance. Now the problem is once i get it going at higher rpms and come to a stop it will die and then won't start for a little while. When it does start i have to turn it over for a while. What's the problem here? I have ran out of ideas.... |

| I'd pull and flush the gas tank and install a new bung and cone filter. I had a bug years ago that would do what your bug is doing intermittently and that was the problem. I'd already tried replacing the filter and fuel lines before. Looks like a fabulous score, 1960 is my very favorite year for bugs! |

Choke was disconnected and i opened it all the way so i dont really know what the deal is, i set the idle higher and it helped but still dies randomly. I have to crank it over for a while before it starts too. I'm kinda done with this for now... at least it runs :?
Anyways here are some photos.. the car also came with its original wheels and once i get some tires for them im going to put them back on. Going to keep it all original 8)

love the car man- and good for keeping it original - it will look nice with the smoothies.
is that thing some sort of oil preheater? you can pull it right off right?
What carb are you running?
Get a original oil bath aircleaner too. |

No i can't pull it off i have no idea what it is, its just wrapped on the bumper for now. The carb and distributor i pulled off a running engine that is in my bus so i could see if it was the cause of my problems... Which it was but now i have new problems. I think I'm getting vapor lock, but it doesnt make sense because even cold it wants to die if im not pressing on the accelerator . When it's hot though after about 10 minutes of driving it or so it will die as soon as i let go of the gas to press the brake and then won't start for a good 5 minutes... |

| The cord under the engine is attached to your sump plate and is block heater. Used in cold climate areas, you would plug it in to keep oil from thickening up which prolongs engine life and allows engine to start quicker. Nice car but needs lots of attention to detail for that original look you're after. Are you going to go all out? |

I'm not after a clean original look. I like the vintage weathered look, its almost 50 years old, it should look like it. Here's how it looks with the original wheels, only one on so it only shows half the car..
