Does the ignition key also unlock the doors and engine lid or is that a separate key?

My ignition key only starts the bug not sure if I am short a key or maybe the PO swapped out the ignition cylinder and key....

From the factory one key did it all. You can send everything out or take it all to a locksmith and have all the cylinders keyed alike.

uh, the PO lost the key to mine, while we are on this subject, is there a quick way to disable the steering lock without ruining anything?

how come i didnt think of that? take all locks to a locksmith.. lmao

i have one key.. and its only for ignition..

sucks cuz one time a kid at school opened my car and pushed it to a nother spot.. pissed me off. :)

pull the steering wheel, turn signal switch and remove the cover held on by two screws.you will find a small hole on the insode of the cylinder.
poke a pick in there and remove the lock tumbler. write down the number and email it to gabevwkey. he will cut a key to code.

Had the same problem on my '72 SB...I simply had a local locksmith make a key for the door handles, take one out and with you. As for the numder on the handles, they matched but they did not work for the cylinders inside, PO's must have replaced the ignition switch and door cylinders years ago. Something to watch out for...I also had a key for the glove box made, its a different size key than the door or ignition, at least on mine. The glove box lock cylinder has a VW logo on it so I assume it was original. So now I have three keys, one for each, no biggie, most 50-60's cars had a different key for the doors and ignition, IMHO cheapest way to go...

No. One key unlocks the doors and operates the ignition, and a separate key locks the glovebox. Also, rather than going to a locksmith, deal with someone who can give you the best in VW service.

Sorry, forgot about the glovebox. Mine doesn't lock. Also, I believe in trying to support my local shops. The locksmith in Mt. Clemens here does a nice job and are fairly priced. Nothing wrong with the site you listed, just like to support my neighbors. Plus, if I gave them those key blanks, they would cut them for me. :D

EDIT: I'm not trying to start an argument, just that the area in which I live has been decimated with job loss in the last two years due to the Big Three being on the ropes, so if I can help people in my area stay in business, I patronize them first. I always check for parts locally before resorting to internet or mail order. I don't mind spending an extra couple bucks if it helps the people around me.

Hey Paul,
I doubt anyone on this site would fault you for spending locally.
Gabe does great work and would be perfect for someone who does not have anyone locally who can do the locksmith work.

But I think everyone would agree that if we don't support our local VW shops (or any locally-owned business) we'll be stuck with the big box stores that don't care about the customer or service.

I enjoy the quality and service I get from Wolfsburg West, etc....but buy locally whenever I can.

The local locksmith I went to has been doing cars for all the local dealers for decades, very expirenced, there was no need to send them to a VW key specialist, my guy had all the blanks in stock, including the glove box...

So which key works the engine lid , ignition or glove box?

BTW last year I had a key made to fit a Mopar ignition the local locksmith had the correct blank in stock charged 30 dollars to make the key was impressed that it could even be done,,,,, the same locksmith will get this work even if he does not have the oem blank

If they're the original keys for a '73:
Glovebox: round head with VW logo
Ignition and Doors: "M" style key (located in small center box near
bottom of the linked page)
Engine Lid: if this was an OEM accessory, it will also use an "M" style
key. If it's aftermarket, may be something completely different than
the standard VW key blanks.
