View original topic: What is the name of the tubes under heat control boxes?
RIOMX Tue Nov 03, 2009 11:06 pm

When I bought the engine from the Road Warrior (Colin / IAC), I had to give up the heat control boxes and the metal tubes connecting to them.

Here is a photo of when they were still on the heaterboxes:

What is their name so I can locate a pair? I've found heat control boxes, but the tubes are never included.

Keep an eye in the classifieds and on eBay. I found a brand new set at a reasonable price not that long ago. I have also fabbed sets in the past, not that hard to do if you have a welder.

I totally would, but I only have one more week to source them. Maybe I can find a pair locally...

Try to, any used German tubes will be better than the spendy new CIP crap. You can install them after the engines in too you know.

German Supply has these - german made ones - for less than CIP wants.

I know. I just really want to get things finished so I don't have to keep messing around. This last summer was grueling. I need a break. I need to get back in shape. I need to start running and working out again instead of wrenching under a bus all winter :)

Try Busted Bus. Right in your neck of the woods.

I've got two options right now, with both sets in different conditions.

I've noticed some of these pipes have "wings."

Was this feature specific for some years? I found some in great condition, but they don't have the wings.

The new replacements do not fit bays although they are sold for them. They are not oval enough and I believe they fit air cooled Vanagons. Look for a used set.

Re stocks ones - one side has a vertical part to attach it to the back of the tin and the other side has a horizontal part.

The wings are mounting brackets, they help keep the pipe in place as the engine moves around and you open and close the flapper valve with the cable. They often break off so that is why the valves you have don't have them. They are not too hard to make just buy the appropriate sized strap from the Simpson Strong Tie area of your local lumber company and cut, drill, and bend to fit. One end of the tie is bolted to the engine tin at the seam and the other was originally welded to the pipe. Your replacement can just be attached to the pipe with a screw clamp.

Wildthings: Thanks for the info. I haven't bought any yet, but I'll keep that in mind.

A buddy of mine has a set of heat control boxes and heat pipes off of a 76.

My question now is...will they work with my motor?

I've noticed that people on the classifieds mark some pieces as only fitting 75-78.

Here's an example:

Thats because they are different setups.

75-78 http://www.bus-boys.com/page34.html

Your buddy's '76 may have had the exhaust changed over the years - it is a popular swap to go from the 75-78 system to the earlier one. If the '76 exhaust is original, it will fit.

Hey Darryl,

The engine is from a 73 bus. It looks like I have the early exhaust:

I believe my friend's parts engine had the stubby muffler shown in the second link.

EDIT: They won't fit, so now I'm looking for proper ones.

What happened to your type 1 motor! Oops. Just saw your other thread.

Finally, a resolution!

BustedBus has them for $59 each. GermanSupply has them for $46.26.

If I would have been able to find them in searches earlier, I would have ordered from German Supply, because of the better price even after shipping.

However, most places call them "connecting elbows," and they are listed as "hot air pipes."

Anyway, figured I'd let you guys know, in case any of you have been looking for good used ones.
