i have an extra key to my 71 super. however i dont have a key for the ignition. most locksmiths wont mess with it becuase of its age. could the numbers on the other key i have be the key code for the ignition? or am i just crazy. the number is xxmxxx.

That's the key code... thanks now I can have a copy made.

OP, the ignition should have a code stamped on it. I read in another thread there is a guy named Gabe? that will produce a key if you send him your ignition code. search Gabe on the site and you'll find it.

can i not just tell a lock smith the key code an have him make another key for the igniton or will i have to send him the ingnition an everything?

Gabe has the book with the codes so he just needs the number. A local locksmith won't have the book.

If it's a proper locksmith, they have it on CD.

Mark1VWs also has the correct blank and can cut to code. The "m" in the number indicates the profile.
