Today I did a mock-up of the 72/74 exhaust I'll be swapping my 77 over to:
I still have to clean up the mating surfaces, but I'm bascially ready to go. I even have the little flaps to go where the fan shroud meets the exchangers.
Now, the muffler is suspect. This muffler has been sitting for a very long time. When I pick it up, there is enough debris inside it sounds like a rainstick. I was able to shake this much crap out of it - it all came through the tailpipe:
Is this muffler too far gone to be useful? |

muffler might be no good.
the empi muffler to heater box gaskets are for sure no good, don't use those ones. the ones made by reinz are good. |

| I'd roll it if there are no obvious holes, who knows if the last engine it was on wasn't a gross polluter and manufactured all that crap on the inside. It's not like it's hard to change if it does spring a leak in the next few years. |

Jealous. I can't imagine life with only six exhaust seals....
(I'm slowly scrounging up the parts also) |

Uh-oh! I'm going to need a picture for that one! Is that something that is interchangeable with my 77 setup?

Busdaddy, is that part #19? If it is, it seems interchangeable:

I've never had one ...no issues. Never seen one yet in a yard.
And you know about the missing LH fresh air riser I assume....and x2 on those empi gaskets |

Yeah, that is for sure interchangeable, and will be transferred over. |

it's different. if you have a really good used '75-'78 one i will gladly swap you a brand new '72-'74 bracket for your used '77 one. i need a good (nearly perfect) '75-'78 one to reproduce. these are almost always missing or badly rust damaged.

| Hi Eric. I had read that Nevada smogs back to 1968. Before you make the change I hope you explored the effect on passing smog tests in Nevada, both present and new laws. Here in California that setup would result in an automatic fail. I know because I wanted to use it but after reviewing other's test results we stayed stock to avoid an unmarketable title and unlicenseable car. Next year the state here is supposed to go to Internet cameras in the smog shops to record the tests to be sure no one is cheating. |

| There will be no issues with emission testing in Nevada. This state isn't run by smog-nazis like Kalifornia. |

Why is it then that there's smog station on every corner here in Reno? However, the shops I see here are definitely "pay to pass"! |

Some people have cars that wont pass, so they do it the 'back-alley' way.
Simple tail-pipe probe test at idle and at 3500 rpm. Visible smoke, lack of a cat converter (if your vehicle came with one), and a missing gas cap are the only visual fails. |

I checked today, and I don't have a hanger of any sort on there now. |

| it's a pretty good idea to have the bracket. the entire left side heater box/muffler combo is hanging off the #3-4 exhaust studs if you don't have the bracket. |
