| Scott - wouldn't it be better to use a muffler hanger of some sort with a rubber absorber to flex a bit instead of the rigid piece you show? |

The exhaust on a VW should move with the engine. No more, no less. The hanger needs to be rigid so that the muffler doesn't flex but stays in the same plane as the engine. If the exhaust had the ability to flex, the connections at the head would be compromised. This is different than the exhaust on an American V8.
And EZ Gruv. I pored twice the amount of rust out of my fist muffler. It worked and sounded great. The muffler I used to replace that one doesn't sound as good and I don't thin will last any longer and it's ceramic coated!
I would roll what you got until it is confirmed that it is shot. |

Can this swap be easily done with the engine installed?
I'll be doing the early exhaust to our 78 as soon as the mail delivers that same bracket as ordered from Scott. Thanks Scott |

jeez really?! that might help explain my exhaust leaks. i think mine is still bolted to the fan housing, just up out of the way.
glad I read this thread! |

| I have the gaskets you need. They are free. That muffler is more than likely toast. That rust is what remains of the baffles.Nos German ones are easily had for those years.Do not make the mistake that your exhaust is not hugely instrumental for lower head temps.Check out Tangerine-Jake's set up.Well worth it.Good luck |

Same question. I have most of the conversion parts coming this week thanks to our fellow Samba member vw76westy. Kind of split between yanking the motor out so I can detail the engine compartment or throwing new exhaust & tins on with it installed and post poning that project.
p.s. Still looking for the last piece (#2 - driver's side) as listed in EZguru's diagram. |

Those pieces can be found in a many boneyard that I have seen......bustedbus has them, but they charge like $30 for it.
It can be done with the engine in, however, lining up three layers of tin to get a screw started will have you cussing. |
