#1 is for the induction pickup on the #1 spark plug wire.
#2 is the connector for the TDC pickup on the bell housing and flywheel
Both are part of the Computer Diagnostic... they they are useless now. |

| So that other square 28ish pin plug would have been for the FI engine wiring then correct? I thought that looked a bit odd compared to mine. |

Nope... VW had a basic Computer Diagnostic system that plugged in there. |

| I am a clean engine bay kinda guy. If it doesnt need to be there its either removed or hidden. If you arent running FI on that car Chrismwood you might consider removing the extra wiring (although carefully if its all intact, some people might want/need it) just for appearance's sake. |

| That wiring/plugs aren't for FI. It's for diagnostics. Just get rid of it. Makes it cleaner looking. |

| Would they have dignostics for a non FI car? That doesnt make much sense as a non computer controlled car would have no need for it. Did they just do that to make it easier to service? No need to clamp the induction clamp on the #1 plug to check time? It would only make sense for me for FI so that you could check what the computer is doing. |

The big square plug was for EXTERNAL computer diagnostics. As in there was a machine that (presumably) existed at VW dealerships that would plug in, and it would be able to do tests just from the plug and check things.
I don't know automated they would have been in 1971 or 1972, or whenever the plugs started appearing. It would be fun to have one of those diagnostic machines, although on a lot of the cars (my 1972 super among them) many of the diagnostic wires have been disconnected. |
