This is the Fat Chick in question. The bumper over-riders really make the car. Thanks for all the support, guys. It should be mine by Tuesday.

And here's a side shot. It's got a lot of "sitting rust."

How do the floor pans look?

I assume you are going to get her, so good luck with the project. There are a lot of supers here in Mexico, so if you are ever looking for something, I may be able to help you find it.

Doesn't fat float? Why would she need rescuing, if she's fat?

Kidding, kidding.

Go for it! 'Nother one saved is another one NOT in the crusher!

Definitely not all bad looking in current state its in. Looks like it'll clean up fairly easy. Giving it a good polishing will probably make the paint shine in no time!

ATLvolksfan Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:33 am

Yeah, it's really not horrible, I just wish rust polished out. Hopefully everything else on the car will be an easy tune up, too. I'm getting more worried about the engine.

Keep it! and remember........
Fat chicks like to get slamed.

Alright, I got my fat chick. She's got some nice new tires and she's looking good. I did a tune up and everything is running fine except that I haven't gotten the adjustment right for the carburetor. I did, however, begin the process of sprucing up the brakes. At first I tried to just bleed the original system through hoping that I wouldn't find any cracked hoses. The car has been sitting for upwards of five years. The brake fluid reservoir was empty so I filled it up and began bleeding only to find my brake system was blowing black chunks. Yuck! So I got new rubber lines and put them on then I went through brake bleeding hell. It's getting dark by five in GA so I called it a day and decided to search on here and found that many people hate bleeding brakes on VW's because it is so damn hard. So, armed with the knowledge that I received from searching I need to do these things differently in regards to my Super's dual circuit system. I also consulted the last issue of VW Trends because there is a good article on bleeding brakes.

1) Use a soda bottle with some brake fluid in it and a fuel line attached to the bleeder nipple to keep from sucking air into the system on the upstroke.

2) The pedal pusher should use long, slow strokes.

3) It may take multiple tries bleeding the whole system to get all the air out.

Okay, so here are two things that I'm not so sure about.

1) Do I need to bleed the front system first since it is a dual circuit?

2) Do I need to bleed the master cylinder?

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

O, and here's a picture for all you visually inspired folks.

MoparFreak69 Fri Nov 13, 2009 9:53 pm

Hey, what did you do with the square tires?

As far as bleeding, on any dual circuit brake system I like to bleed the farthest drum/disc first and then move in from there. Just my personal way of doing it, there really isnt a right or a wrong as long as you get all the air out.

Looks a little nicer than mine did when I got it except the rust spots. It does look like a fun little project though. Have fun with it!

Why not? Sounds like a good DD.

Super-B's are harder to make look cool but it can be done. Ive seen some cool looking ones. I like the big nerf bars on the fronts of Supers.
I like them with low-gloss paint. Use your creativity and see what you come up with.

After two weeks in the shop following my failed attempts at reviving the brakes, I finally have rescued my fat chick. Here's a pic of my anxious drive home.

Next on the list is chasing down the weird wiring issue causing the left turn signal to stay on all the time... Volkswagens are such fun cars.

Congrats on the fat chick....had the same break issues on my '79 fat chick...they look to be about the same conidtion, except my fat chick likes to go topless (she is a vert)

It looks better than mine did when I started on it! Good luck and enjoy. Mine is in pieces right now fighting the shimmy issue. The bride is not impressed as it is taking up her side of the garage at the moment and we're supposed to get freezing rain tonight. Looks like I'm scraping two sets of windows in the morning before work!

600 and your driving it?!.....good score. electrical is not that scary. nice color wiring diagrams in the Bentley. ..have fun

ATLvolksfan Mon Dec 07, 2009 7:07 pm

600 for the car + 300 for tires + 130 for a carb rebuild + 95 to clean the gas tank + 625 to get the brakes fixed. I just tell myself it's a worthy cause and keep opening my wallet.
