I found a wrecked ford probe for 200 bucks and was wondering if the engine would be a good canddate to put in my baja? I cant find the website for the adapters for vw trannys. Anybody have any input? I know it is a 2.2litre inline four made by mazda, but thats all.
Thanks, Aaron |

| Thanks for the link. And damn, the probe engine would have been perfect, it was 110hp, but kennedy doesnt make an adapter kit. |

| Iron or aluminum block? I know a lot of those Mazda 4 bangers had iron blocks (1.6L Miata, for example). |

Why not a 2.1 liter Vanagon? Bolts right up to an 091, no adapters, stock starter, very light weight, short length motor. Add 1.25 rocker arms, Weber 44 IDF. VW type off road exhaust can be adapted by rotating the mounting flanges. Some Vanagon motors can have corrosion on the head surfaces, so check for signs of seepage. However, we are talking about an off-road car that will not get THAT MANY miles. Plus, I have had great luck using JB weld (don't laugh!) to fill minor corrosion pits and those motors have run many thousands of miles afterwards.
You'll still get good heat, and run a VW, and avoid that in-line 4-cyl. vibration

Get something newer. A complete engine at many of the pick a part style yards around here is about $200. I'd go with a Subaru, GM Ecotec, or Ford Duratec if you want to stick with a 4 banger. All aluminum and 4 valves per cylinder. I have seen all of these engines in yards here.

I've used rabbit/jetta/fox 1.8 engines with great luck. I used the stock CSI
fuel injection with no computer, had no issues. Even had one engine keep running for 2 minutes while the car was upside down! |
