I have a 1972 Super and I'd like to make a spare for the glove box key. The key I have for it now is the circular one with the cut-out VW logo. What key blank do I need to make a spare?
The one I have for the driver's door is the oblong sort of asymmetrical topped one. To copy this key what blank do I use? |

I just went to a locksmith and they were able to make a new ignition key for my '71 Super just from the serial number on a worn out original key.
They also copied my glove box key, no problem and cheap.
They can rekey door locks but that's not cheap.

I just had the glove box key made for my 72 SB at a local NJ locksmith, but he had to special order a box of blanks, 10, I think and he may have some leftover. Here's his website, call him, he will know the key type and maybe sell you a blank or mail your key to him and he'll make it.

| BTW, it was a special one sided spline key, not the same as the doors or ignition that have a double sided spline plus it has a shorter shank, if those are the right terms? I'm not a locksmith..., but this guy knew what it was and has them. There is a code number for them. |

Do any of them look like these keys? Has anyone even seen these keys?
The little old lady I bought the car from 10yrs ago gave them to me (I'm the 2nd owner). They all work for the doors, engine lid, glove box...none for the ignition though, I believe...

| I looked at your photo. Upper left is typical door/ignition key for that vintage. Upper right (glove box door) looks to be a match-up with the key from one of my old glove box door keys, it's an "SC" type key blank. |

Cusser is right it should be an SC code key. You can get a blank from www.wolfsburgwest.com Or if you have a key and need a duplicate try www.mark1vws.com There should be a code on the lock itself
I just had Mark make me a key for my t handle. |

I believe it should actually be an SU. At least, that's the one that's on my 71 vert. I had fresh keys cut to code by http://www.mark1vws.com/
Check out his keys page. SC and SU look similar. The glove box lock should have the code stamped on it.

Your glove box lock requires an SU blank.
Your left door uses the original M type blank.
All those other keys are repro junk.
If you look in the classifieds, you should be able to find a used 72 and later door handle, then have it matched to your upper left key (M).
Also available is a deck lid lock that can also match the left door key.
Which one works in your ignition? |
