Great to see ur Baka to work on ur Baja chubby
How's that harbor freight sand blaster working for u? Did u get all the bugs worked out?

chubby53 Tue Apr 13, 2010 8:27 am

it works awesome! i did some research and did the mods that other people have done, also i had the "dead mans valve" on it and it sucked so i went and got a couple ball valves and screwed them on the end of the dead mans handle and it works great. OH, i also had to get more media, i think i only had 25-30 lbs to start with so i could only run for a few minutes at first and i would have to keep shaking the tank. now that i have over 60lbs in there the only thing slowing me down is waitng for my compressor. which is fine, it gives me little breaks between sessions to clean my face shield, lights, ect. and see where i'm at. once i get all my metal work done, i'm going to blast the outside of the car, then start working on to the doors and fiberglass

hey worked on the baja for a couple hrs today. got the rear apron trimmed and all the excess metal i don't want cut off. i decided to cut close to the luggage compartment. here's a couple pics.

i plan on putting some small bead welds along the seams to add some strength.

this is the leftover carnage.

with my body lift on i should be able to access just about any part of the tranny or engine i need to with no trouble.

that looks great
its defenatly alot easier to get to the trans with all that gone

started on the repair of the drivers side quarter panel and heater channel. shouldn't be half as bad as the pass. side. although it always seems like the last one is the hardest. i'll get some pics of my work and post soon.

hey, check me out working on my car!! finally did a few hours on it. here is what i did, i had to cut out some of the heater channel and rear drivers quarter panel. here is what i did...

needed some metal to replace the rusted out section, good thing i have a donor car, cut a section from the door(only straight part left on the car).

this is the sections i need to replace

this is my fabbed up replacement(top) and the old rusted piece(bottom). i only had a bench vise, hammer and a torch and welder. not bad if you ask me.

this is the finished product. still need to grind welds and bondo the outside, and weld in the inner quarter webbing on the inside. not bad for no metal fabbing education. of course i had the burning hole experience. i tried to fix then burn a bigger hole. so now i have a whole bunch of weld on the heater tube. oh well.

this is the new quarter section welded in, still needs some grinding

so what do you all think? seems ok, plus be minimal bondo... yippee. maybe tomorrow or monday.
on a good note i have an interview next week. awesome.
Job = money = be able to justify working on baja and getting finished!!

I think that's some great work... I would have put on tin foil and pop-rivets by now, me and sheetmetal don't get along.

chubby53 Thu May 13, 2010 11:24 pm

taken alot of practice and "oh shit that isn't right" moments, but it's worth it. the more i do the better i get at it. the best part is whenever i finish this baja and start my long travel dream baja i should be really good at fabbing and welding. the really best part is the welder i've been using this whole time is my buddies that i've been "storing" for him since he has no where to keep it.

DAM SON DATS SOME FAB SKILLS.

Thats california talk for "wow, your pretty good with fabricating".

Seriously, im pretty impressed with how much your doing to this bug. It makes me want to take a trip up to Oregon to see that baja in person.

chubby53 Fri May 14, 2010 9:06 am

thanks. unfortunately there is still going to be some rust here and there that i miss or is too hard to get to. overall though i think i've gotten rid of the majority of it. Whenever my baja is done if you were to make a trip up here we could make a trip to the dunes or find some mud or something. would be a lot of fun. what's funny is when i was working on my baja this last winter i was thinking it would be done by this summer, now i'm hoping to be done by this winter. lol

thanks again.
got an interview monday, hopefully start working in a week or so. Then maybe i will get more motivated. Next week i'm going to hit it hard and get as much as i can done and ready for paint.

chubby53 Sat May 15, 2010 7:51 pm

was hoping to grind those welds today, but no luck. it was beautiful outside and went and got a blow up pool for my 3 yr old princess. then i had to demo an old dog kennel i built a few years ago. i think i had it ready for a hurricane, took my most of the day. lol. hoping tomorrow i can grind the welds and do a little bondo touch up.

chubby53 Sun May 16, 2010 10:15 pm

didn't get around to the baja today. yard work took a lot longer than expected. but soon i will be grinding/bondo/sanding. I'll keep you posted.

got my interview tomorrow at 10. I'm so excited/nervous. hope it works out. i really need to get back into the working scene.

tanner_122 Sun May 16, 2010 10:48 pm

Isn't that the truth. I had to change the name of my build to winter/spring, now I need to change it to "My never ending project". Keep up the good work. :D

When I did my 9 car it ended up taking me almost 2 years... I was out for working on it for 6 months due to a surgery I had but still took way longer than I anticipated.
