hello all, finally got my baja over to the new house, used the tow bar so she could come over on her own tires. Put a smile on my face even though she's just a shell still. I'm hoping to start working on her again in another couple weeks or so. Been a long process moving my shop, work benches, cabinets, garage, ect... over and getting it all organized. i'll keep you updated. later guys.

chubby53 Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:05 am

Nothing to update, just thought i would drop a note saying that i'm definatly going through belated withdrawls. I'm really wanting to work on my car :( I figure i've got about 1-2 weeks worth of stuff to do on/at my house then i can get into it.

I think i'm going to put in the tranny next( should go quick.) I have 3 or 4 irs tranny's that i'm not sure of the condition, so it's going to be fun when i get her running. basically put in tranny, run it hard to see if there are any probs., pull out and repeat with other tranny's. I'm hoping i have 2 or 3 good ones. would be nice to have spares, and be able to sell down the road to help pay for a bus tranny when the time comes.

back to the car. after i put in the tranny i need to get correct front end on the car and brakes done.

I think after that i will start working on my front seats. I'm kind of wishing would have found some seats like my wifes grand am. They are manual , but has power to raise or lower them. Well i should get back to work. hopefullly next time you hear from me i will have gotten some progress on the car. Later

Hang in there Chubby, maybe you will have some new great ideas to add to your build.

chubby53 Fri Mar 09, 2012 6:35 pm

nothin much to say. i did pick up what looked to be the rear seat out of an astro van u think. it was free. i was hoping that it would fit inmy baja for a back seat, but i think its too tall. with it in place and me sitting on it i have abo-ut two inches between my head and the roof.i could do some cutting and get another 1-1/2" of clearance. i guess it would be fine for small children, but i think it's about 4-6" too deep also. makes for hardly any leg room. I could tear off all the covers and padding, and cut out about 6" of the middle of the seat and it would fit back further, but sure is a lot of work for a rear seat. I have stock seats, but they need stripped down, blasted and painted, and re-padded and re-covered. If i remeber right a rear jeep seat would fit good, but there's the $$$ issue i seem to have. I might mess with it a little more to see if i could get it to fit better, i just would like more head room for my passengers, specially if they are wearing helmets. Going to try to get started on the car again this weekend. Cross your fingers.
Well all for now. Later dudes

Well didn't get in any baja time this weekend, but did do lighting in the shop. I went from (3) 8' two lamp lights to (11) 8' two lamp lights. I can see now!!

Well Just thought i would give a quick update. And yes... nothing to update. Poor little car, just collecting dust. :( I think work is going to mellow out some though soon, so i'll actually get some time to work on it. I made some extra $$ and of course i have my eyes on a $500 69 bug. Need to look into it though and make sure no big rust issues. If i do get it it's going to be my daughters first bug then hopefully her first baja :D :D
I should use that money for my baja, but daughter comes first. besides, you can off road a stock bug just as fun as a baja.

chubby53 Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:33 pm

hey!!! actually got to work on my car again:) Not much, but i got out there. got the steering column in, took apart and greased up my turn signal switch, and started to mess with my seats. I have a pretty good idea of how i'm going to mount them. It's nice cause i can unbolt the seat tracks and modify them. I had an extra steering shaft bearing that i was able to press in the bottom of the column to hold the shaft steady. I'm going to get a big ass fender washer and some kind of clamp to put around the steering shaft just below the bottom bearing to hopefully keep sand, mud, dirt and what ever else gets flung up out of my bearing. hoping to work on it a little tomorrow(not sure though i got to get ready for fishing saturday). but for sure going to work on it sunday.

Felt good working on it again. I will take and post pics when i get a substantial amount done.

Thanks, I did get out there again today. I got the drivers seat all mounted. going to try to get the passenger done tomorrow. those subaru seats are tight fitting that's for sure. I found out that i'm going to have to extend my shifter up at least 2-3" to clear from hitting my seats when shifting.. also going to have to get creative with my seatbelt mounts. My new seat tracks interfear with the existing mounts. I'm probably just going to go with traditional 3 point seatbelts. not sure yet.. one step at a time. once i get my seats done i'm going to focus on the front end and try to get it all done. i will post some pics of my seats when done. later

Bajabugman1970 Sun Apr 29, 2012 11:56 pm

Glad to see you back in action again on the bug. I just got my bug on the road about 4 weeka ago and am working on all the little things as i go. It is all road legal now just working on interior and bumper rework for towing. Later all.

chubby53 Tue May 01, 2012 7:05 am

got the passenger seat in last night. No pics yet though, got to put some paint on the mounts first. Probably won't touch it until thursday or so now though. need to do some "honeydoos" the next couple days and will be working long.
All goes well.. heres my list of to do next
1. finish seats(painting, ect...)
2. cut and turn front end and mount on car
3. get u-joints and complete steering assy.
4. brakes(mounting resivoir, pedal ass. bleeding, ect.)
5. install shift rod, extend shifter at least 3"
6. find decent 3pt seat belts and install
7. dig out stock back seat and re-pad and cover, install
8. Wiring!! this is the fun one.

If money goes right, i'm really trying to get it together by the 4th of july. not sure though.

Sweet! It's great to have a list, always makes things seem more do-able for me. I'm looking forward to the progress

worked on my car tonight. got the front end torn apart ready to cut and turn. Took apart my front brakes. surprisingly they look awesome for sitting for 5 yrs.
i'm hoping to be able to work on it saturday for most of the day

chubby53 Tue May 08, 2012 11:27 pm

so far this is a recap of what's been done lately. installed front seats, shifter rod and new bushing(went in suprisingly easy). modified shifter to fit around seats better, welded in adjusters on a different link pin beam and installed all parts, put in tranny, and put in steering shaft and column I think that's it. Here is some pics of my marathon project.
Tranny put in, not bolted in yet though. Just wanted to make sure shifter worked. IT DOES!!

some pics of my seat brackets. I welded angle iron to the tunnel and lift and bolted tubing to it. works great.

my modified shifter. still have to finish welding it. it fits around the seats now. before i couldn't put it into reverse, second, or fourth without it hitting the seats.

a shot of the dash with the steering shaft and wheel installed

shot of the bearing i used to hold the steering shaft center. I'm going to have to notch it so it doesn't ground out my horn wire

still have to make up steering linkage. Possible tomorrow night

Also need to use a BFH to clearance my tunnel so the tie rod doesn't hit when i try to turn the wheel

some shots of my front end with adjusters installed. Also my spindles. They've been reinforced and has larger link pins.

Had to get some shock boss's and relocate. otherwise my shock would bottom out before it his the stops.

Well that's all for now. Hopefully by the end of the weekend i'll have a lot more done. See ya

Bajabugman1970 Wed May 09, 2012 11:15 am

Hey Chubby good job on all your work, looking good. I was thinking that wouldn't it be better to cut out the frame head area that the tie rod hits and weld in a piece of halfround tubeing than use a BFH, the hammering could stretch and change the front beam angle? Just a thought. I am haveing problems with my steering shaft hitting the inner tube and making my horn go off every time I turn the wheel.
Hope to see you on the road soon.

I never really thought about that, would probably be easier than trying to swing a hammer in that confined place also. I have some channel that might be long enough and wide enough. Would it be stronger or weaker than tubing? It's about 1-1/2" X 3" It would almost be perfect for that area. It's way thicker than the existing steel also. Last thing i want to do is weaken the front frame head. Not sure when the day will be that i can extend a cage to the front beam.

Not sure how much time i'm going to get tonight on it. Probably work late and go in early tomorrow. :( I need the $$ though.

chubby53 Sat May 12, 2012 12:14 am

well i did the bfh trick on the tunnel. I only needed a little bit of room, so i heated up the area good and hot and did some pounding. i think it will be fine.
I got my steering linkage all done, i should still have a horn also. Yippee.
I also got my brakes all done. I'm hoping tomorrow to get what i need to throw in my gas tank. then i'll finish welding the shifter and get the inside of the car done. Later dudes. Pics to come soon.
