View original topic: Which is the correct rear license bracket for late Supers?

Doing a proper resto on a '78 convertible and want to get the rear license plate bracket correct. There are two types. First type is held in place by the light housing and a tab that goes through the small hole in the rear decklid like this:

My guess is the above type was not the common one installed by VW or the dealer.

The second one looks like this I suspect its what was generally used back-in-the-day:

Can anyone shed light on this? Car is heading in for paint in a couple days, so want to get this sorted out now. I realize this is a small matter, but a bunch of small matters add up. I've already cleaned off the shelf for the future trophies

Thanks.

There is no "Proper" bracket. The cars were shipped from the factory to the USA WITHOUT ANY license plate bracket. They were dealer sourced and installed. If you have holes in your engine lid you'd have had the lower picture. If no holes the upper. I have a '78 & (2) '79s and all three have different brackets.

Gracias! I had the upper on my '79 and the lower on my current '78.

Funny you brought that up.
My plates sits very low from the light housing. I was wondering the same thing.
