I know a Norwegian doubledoor with this option :) rusty as hell though..

That is one large engine compartment. Would love to see the engine door opened photo. From what I could not see it would appear that the gas tank sat above the engine and you had to open the engine door to gas it up.

In todays BD terminology this is close to mint...

damnit, I also remember the days in the early nineties not buying any old split bus because of Dimesized holes in the doglegs or because it was only a Kombi or a highroof....JEEEEEZAS !!!

Yep, many of us remember those days. Myself all too well. The stuff i passed on makes me wanna jump off a bridge now.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's we'd have absolutely no interest whatsoever in any Bus that had the wheel wells cut. That was a pretty harsh standard yet that was exactly how it was.

Wheel wells, bulkhead, and sometimes even the radio hole in the dash!

"This is a barndoor optional tailgate in all its glory. The colour images are of a tailagte from a '54 Portuguese bus, whilst the black and white images are of an early '52 bus (notice the single reflector). It is interesting to notice that the '52 tailgate has no rear window and has the same inner strengthening as that of the engine lid."

In fact the caption that goes with that this picture is wrong and that is actually an early 51/50 barndoor (would bet early 51 though) with a very early style and very rare factory opening rear hatch.
Actually i know the picture and its actually a non rear window double door panelvan with opening non rear window early rear hatch so now currently rarer than non existant i think :).

Familiar photos to me, my ex 20-083504 and 20-110764
(watch their photos at barndoor.dk)

All portuguese barndoors had that rear hatch and safaris from
mid 1953. So very common here.

A no rear window hatch .. it would be fun finding one of those.

Try this one I found about 15 years ago

20-013404 at www.barndoor.dk

Also my ex Miesen from January 1951 that Johnny D is restoring did have a blind rear hatch

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=287108&start=0

Both were converted by Miesen a company from Bonn.
