As the title says, I want to get an oil filter on my engine. As the current engine stands, it doesn't have a filter or anything right?
To get a filter, I can get a kit that goes on right underneath the big pully?

Also, is my distributor a 009? Should I get a different one? When I purchased this car (very recently) the guys said it was a 1776? engine? What makes it a 1776? A 1600 with bigger pistons?

I've used Canton-Mecca filters for over 25 years. I currently have one on my '74 Thing, and one on my daily driven '71 Super.
Both cars have the filter mounted inside the engine compartment.
They stay clean and out of harm's way.
Here's a photo of the Super Beetle unit:

My 1835 has Maxi2 pump/filter combination from CB Performance (OK, it was Claude's Buggies then, it's at least 25 years old).

Mine's a single "Quiet Exhaust", like the old Thunderbird brand. |

If you intend to use one of those filter pumps with a stock exhaust system, you need the muffler with the heat riser tube on the right (passenger) side of the muffler to avoid interference problems. I'm not sure which cars originally came with this configuration, but it's not the standard setup.
In any event, the oil, while in the filter will be heated by its proximity to to the very hot muffler.
In my opinion, considering that you probably need to replace the muffler to use them, the filter pumps are a simple solution, but they are not the best one.

I just found one of those adapters in a "pile of parts" recently. Since you appear to have been running it for so long I will take that as a recommendation to run one. |

One can cut the pump cover between the pump and filter. Then angle down and forward slightly, and have a welder weld the two pieces back together. Then redrill out the oil passages from the filter end.
Here is one of the filter covers partly done up.
As for the muffler possibly heating the oil in the filter. Have not seen any increase in oil temp when switching from stock pump to the filter pumps. There is a lot of cooling air being blown over the filter and muffler to help with this.
Plus if you take a gander of the type 4 engine they came from the factory with the stock oil filter in same location near the muffler.
Also the stock oil pump is exposed to the muffler and there are no heating problems there.
If it is still a problem in ones mind, it would not be hard to weld a sheet metal deflector plate to the forward side of the muffler if need be.
Would be leery of installing an oil filter in a fender well where a thrown up rock can puncture the filter..... |

It's already been said, but I agree: the Mexibug-style filter pump (CB Performance, Brazilian-made aftermarket, etc) is a pretty straightforward install and doesn't require full-flowing the case. They're available just about anywhere. Stick with the CB unit - good quality stuff!
A 1776 is a big-bore engine: 90.5mm x 69mm (stock stroke). No way to tell without pulling a head or doing a cc test. |

I got mine from BAP here in Arizona, believe it was (really) Empi brand http://www.jbugs.com/product/3312.html?Category_Code=Empi701, and it DID FIT better than my original exhaust.
I use Fram PH43 oil filters with my Maxi2. A larger filter can also be used with it. |

Yes; the amount of oil required to fill the oil filter cannister. Use the existing dipstick mark. |
