Thanks!

Looks like its the 1300-1600. It was hard for me to see the difference but after studying it, it looked like the tubes were pointing slightly inward toward the engine and had a lip around the flange instead of attaching flat downward. From what I can tell, it must be the 1300-1600. Is there a way to narrow it down further?

Well, you can look at the casting/serial numbers on the heads under the rocker arms - if they are 1500/1600 heads then it's probably a 1600. Most such engines have been rebuilt to 1600 over the years.

Ok Great! Really appreciate the help. New to VW and still almost everything to learn. I really want to pull the engine anyway to check the cooling. Just got it and it seems to run a bit hot (had to get it home). Has good compression but leaks oil, gets hot, doesn't want to idle seems out of time.

When we get where we can see it, I'll pull the covers off and try to see the casing stamp.

1300 heads look like this, by the way (although these can be bored out to accept larger jugs, which is why the only way to know for sure what you got is to take a head off and measure the bore/stroke) The casting/part number is at the very bottom of this picture. 113 101 373B

The data for the H5 series is limited compared to some of the others in the late 60s, but it IS there. On this page: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php, go down to 1968, and you'll find a column that says 1500 M147. The M147 is the factory build-code for US-spec engines at that time. I'd place that engine as being Late August or early Sept 1968.

Link did not work for me. Did not seem o be able to find the page by going directly.
So, what is this case from?
H space 5157319 ( H 5157319 )

Historically, the H5 case is considered the bastard runt of VW cases due to its penchant for studs pulling out of the case... also, it's a single-relief case. It might be okay to use in building a stock cruiser motor, but it isn't the best starting point for a performance motor.

Hi all, I have what I thought to be a 1200 based on serial number. The block is stamped under the generator housing 8898499 which puts it as a 64 1200. One head is a 311 101 373A, the other I can't make out the number. The case is a single oil pressure relief case, has non dog house tin, 1300-1600 style single port intake, and a 28 PICT1 carb. It also has a 200mm flywheel. I just bought a new 40HP German muffler from Chirco and a Sachs' 180mm clutch kit, but neither fit this engine. Any thoughts on what this abortion is?

It's probably been opened up for 1300-1600 pistons and has a 69mm crankshaft inside of it. Probably a 1600SP now.

Thanks! I'm fairly new to VWs so this threw me for a loop. I'm still not used to everything being a mix match of parts from many different years. What is required to make a 1200 into a 1600?

Well, you machine the cylinder openings for the larger cylinders, and you change out the crankshaft, and use different cylinder studs. That's about it. 40HP cases aren't exactly the greatest bases to build up like that though, but it is something that was/is done. It's helpful if the case was in very good shape to begin with, then case savers for the head studs installed, and the bores for the camshaft cut to accept later bearing shells.
