seals for windows & doors german ones cost $100+ , mexican or brazilin cost $20
the cheap ones will not fit right, they will leak ,& in a year or 2 start to crack
so don't buy the cheap crap !!!
mirrors, used original mirrors go for $15-$25 depending on condition
new repo mirrors go for $20,the repo mirror does not have ball pivot around mirror to make adjustments,
the actual mirror will fall out in less than 2 months of driving
& the chrome will start to pit & rust in 6 months(if you are able to reglue the mirror after it falls out )
a used original will last another 30 years after you clean it up

hub caps, new ones are thinner & will pop out & get lost, those the stay on after 300 miles will have chrome flake off & turn to rust

headlight rings, new ones don't fit right & are made of plastic, need i say more.........

the heater knobs (blue and red rubber dice) repos are made of cheap chinese plastic with colors that look funky, you can see the cheap color & quality from 2 car lengths on these things

(you know how long chinese plastic will last)

what i'm getting at is almost all reproduction stuff is cheap crap that is not worth .02 cents

plus 3x labor (1. put it on, 2. take it off, 3. replace it with good original & put back on)

does anyone have links to threads where people vent after buying this junk so that bajacapt does not make the same mistake

Thanks so much for this very truth words of advice...
I am very glad to tell you I done my homework on this, read a lot on VW related forums on parts and accessories for my Bus and thanks to that I came to the same conclusion you have about certain aftermarket parts and accessories.
I found most of my stuff at a place called The Bus Depot, I am sure you heard about it, they have the actual German mirror replacements, as well as the hubs and trims, also most of the rubber, this of course at a premium price but in my opinion definitively worth the cost!

Here is a link to the mirrors I found

http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=211857513F

I also found my hubs and trim and rubber there, all are the original German replacement stuff
This is excellent practice indeed, glad it got brought up and that more Bus restorers benefit from this knowledge, this is one of those times when "You get what you pay for" really comes around...

Now for the rubber dice, I have not been able to find those, even the Chinese ones lol!

Thanks vw76Westy for the very truth words of advice!

Bigbore,
I have considered just putting all glass with no vents, but my kids do enjoy the vents open during summer when we driving around, If I have to do this I need to leave at least 1 vent wing back there....

Man oh man.. I just found out that Bus Depot is all out of the nice original German rear view mirrors, they said they will be getting more late in December...
I think one of mine is very restorable for sure ( the right one) but the left one probably not, the arm has lost the chrome and it shows some corrosion.
Do you know where can I get just the glass mirror for this?
I will post some pixs tomorrow, just too much going right now.
Also I spoke to Eric from Small Car in Hesperia California, he said he will call me back with some response on the vent wings, so a good chance there...(Thanks Todd! I told him you referred me to him) I will call him tomorrow again and ask about the mirrors.
I seen the aftermarket mirrors, I don't like the fact that they don't have the adjustable ball joint on them like originals, plus chrome is not the best quality..
Got a couple of PMs with vent wing offers, thanks guys! just waiting on pix ;)

Yep I can see that. In the westy the one thats there is not needed and it has other windows that open.

He can also call Diane at Interstate VW in San Marcos (San Diego Co) whose main yard is in Lake Elsinore (both are closer). I suggested 76VWwesty because he gets around to all these yards as he lives in So Cal also. I think vw76Westy also visits the Irwindale yard that is closing.

x2 here for Interstate:

Got all my wing vents guys :D
Thanks to TubDub here at the forum for his fast shipping, got one from him, got to post positive feedback for him...
I got the rest from the guys recommended by Ned, Small Car Connections, I spoke with Chris, the owner and to Eric. both very helpful, also the prices very reasonable, here is a link to their website, worth book marking for sure:

http://www.smallcarconnection.com/

I am getting started removing everything in the bus, seats, carpet, and the windows, been reading all I can on the vent wing removal, sounds involved but doable.
Thanks again to all replies
