I just swapped the transaxle in my bug but now when I am in first it kicks out of gear but if you hold it in first it seems fine any suggestions on what it could be? mabey the clutch cable needs to be adjusted tighter?

Check for a cracked nose cone on the tranny or broken front mount. Otherwise it is time for a new tranny. It is not the clutch cable.

On both my bug and my dad's, we had to adjust the position of the shift rod bushing. Sorry if that's not the right word for it. I'm talking about the thing connecting the shift rod to the transmission. My dad put a urathene one on and the dimple for the original connecter wouldnt let us shift into any gears, but once we did it just popped out of gear. To fix this we position it and the nose cone to where we could get all gears and re-dimpled it there.

When I swapped the transaxle I swapped nose cones and front mounts and neither seemed to be broken or cracked.

Are you shifting into all forward gears fully? Maybe the shifter plate needs adjusting, if not the coupler / bushing. Otherwise it's internal...
