I have removed the cv joint )n my 75 Baywindow and 2 of the washers are missing. Where would I find new ones?

Andre4 Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:58 pm

Most people don't reinstall the washers. You should be able to just carry on without them.

Depends on which washers you are referring to. Those cupped washers on the inboard side do not need to be replaced, but the little grooved washers on the CV bolts do need to be there.

These?

I'm guessing the purpose would be to keep the bolts torqued down?

or the "pan" washers that live on the inside edge of the joints.

they keep the joint pressed against the circlip.

SGKent Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:22 pm

the washers with the groves go on each bolt. They keep the bolts from backing out which is a problem some people have who don't use them.

The big cupped washer under the circlip is part of the mechanism that keeps the cv on the axle. It prevents the cv joint from chattering and poundng the circlip.

Now I am a little confused. I was speaking of the twin saddle washer. I have not seen a cir clip where would that be? I am installing complete axel so I am thinking I would not have even seen the cir clip. Is that assumption correct?

are you referring to these?

Yes

SGKent Fri Nov 06, 2009 3:51 pm

they are around on Samba classifieds or Scott at German Supply has them. They usually don't go bad and be sure to get the grooved washers to go with them.

There is someone

in Jasper GA who sells a lot of used parts on Samba. That might be quicker shipping than Canada if he has any.

BusDepot also lists them but if you want to order these from them you need to call them to make sure they can get them because they list a lot of OEM parts that are NLA.

The circlip is in the groove at the tip of the shaft. After the grease is cleaned off you should be able to see the clip.

The dished washers are no longer used and should be discarded if the circlip and joint is removed or replaced on the shaft. Some new joint kits still come with that washer, just don't use it.

Your Bentley service manual has that and other important information that is needed to work on the drive shafts. We have been seeing a lot of drive shaft and CV joint failures here on the Samba. It's usually always due to the work not being done correctly.

Since no one else came out and said it, I will.

YES, you need the twin saddle washer. There are three of them on each CV, they help spread the force of the bolts over the circumference of the metal that holds the boot to the CV joint.

If you are missing some, make sure to get replacements. Used are fine if you can find them.

Yep, do it per the book.

I did my CVs in September and left off the dished washer, but was just curious why it is not needed anymore. My Bentley said to discard it, but the Muir manual said to use it again.

Thanks to all.I have located replacements and have the lock washers.

according to Bentley they were discarded in 1975. My best guess is that alot of people did not get them put back on right so circlips popped off and that led to failures.

Mike C Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:11 pm

Thanks, I forgot to add the 1975 part.

To put it all in better perspective it goes like this. Bentley say's to discard the Muir book.

from personal experience, you need those. otherwise the bolts back out and the cv falls off..
