your brake booset may be bad (letting air into the manifold when you step on the brakes) and your carbs are set too rich. If adding air makes it rev it is telling you that you have too much fuel compared to air.
Deal with each seperately.
Sitting in the car let it idle for a few seconds.
While it is idling pull the emergency brake.
Take your foot off the brakes.
Turn off the engine.
Count to 30.
Step on the brakes and let up.
Step on the brakes and let up
Step on the brakes and let up
Step on the brakes and let up
After two or three times stepping on the brakes, any vacuum stored in the booster should be used up and the brakes will get harder since the booster isn't helping. If there is no difference between the first step on the brakes and the third to fifth one then the vacuum leaked out and that means the booster is bad. It needs to be rebuilt. Do a search under booster and send it to the fellow in Texas who rebuilds all the Samba ones.
As to the idle. If the booster tests good do this test now. If it tests bad do it after you fix the booster.
Turn the idle mixture screw leaner 1/4 turn. Step on the brakes. Does the engine RPM increase or decrease? Repeat until there is no change in RPM then turn it richer 1/2 turn not to go past where you were originally. Or take your bus to a good mechanic to have the carbs adjusted. You are wasting gas and washing the oil off your cylinder wall, shortening the life of your engine. If your carbs have black hard foam floats they may be worn out. |
