I want to tow a small hot dog cart, is there anyway I could do that with a bug?

They make trailer hitches for bugs. Look in the classifieds

Yes. And if you want brand new, there's always "our friends" at Mid America http://www.mamotorworks.com/acvw?frame=1.6461

Are these things safe? I don't want to rip my bug in two. Also, I'm running pre68 bumpers and have the adapter brackets. Will these hitches interfere?

im selling the exact hitch that you need. check my ads
its the factory hitch that fits inside the rear bumper on a 68-73
all that you see is the ounge sticking out

Not sure if that kind of hitch will work with those kind of bumpers on a later car.

But as for original application, yes they were fairly safe if they were installed right - they clamp onto the fork on either side of the tranny and won't rip the body in two! In fact VW used this photo for a couple years circa 1970 to promote their hitch. (Not that I'd think driving this car would be very fun loaded up as it is)

Gotta love that old ad lol. Thanks for sharing that photo!

You're welcome, pretty easy to do, just a matter of digging it up on the Archives! TONS of brochures there..!

The type of hitch attached around the tranny would work fine with a baja (minus rear bumper and back end for that matter obviously) then?

pafree Mon Nov 09, 2009 6:38 pm

might be a little radical, but this receiver hitch fit perfect between the extended stock bumper mounts brackets.

LMAO I love that video. Maybe I could try that with my 5th wheel and my pickup #-o

Nice work horse. Unfortunately somebody pantsed mine, so no back bumper, if not that would have been a good solution.
