Quote: The only thing I can recall automotive that made a noise like a 12 gauge shottie on the back seat of the bus was the battery in my mother's old bronco exploding in the garage one morning. But that blew the hood off, so you'd probably know it if that was the problem...
Thought it could have been that or the auxiliary battery, but no and like I said everyhting in the engine bay looked fine.

Have you checked your spare wheel since the bang??
Checked that and the small propane bottle under the sink that I have for my Mr. Heat.

Perfect! You're on the right track then...

...and the rest of the time I am reading the Bentley manual....

Aopisa,

My thoughts on the "Big Bang" topic (not Astronomy) is that if the instance re-occurs again do get back with the membership. I personally think that a 12 gauge shot gun round going off in the back of your Bus would have grenaded your engine, sounds like it did with your pants. Most loud backfires are due to the hot muffler/exhaust loading up with fuel vapor once the engine has been shut off, just my thoughts, others may disagree.
Keep on Bussin' and let us know if this happens again.

Maybe I was hallucinating? I am beginning to question if it really happened.

That pretty much sums it up. Everything that happens with my bus, good or bad, is new to me. The few things that have happened seem at this point to be isolated incidents which have not repeated themselves. I need to build up my own database of experiences based on how this bus behaves. So I just need to keep on Bussin'. And of course turn to the vast knowledge base contained within the archives and the brains of The Samba forums and its members.

At the same point that's what makes the big bang so perplexing. Whenever anyone poses a question here, there is at least one person who has experienced something like it before. And since no one seems to have had this happen to them, I might conclude it was external or all just in my head... :-k

^^^ Breakdown anxiety is just a normal part of bus ownership^^^ :D
Stay calm, keep your wits & tool kit close by.

No one has mentioned a Birdstrike yet :?

just last week when i was driving my bus, i heard a loud scream from the back, it actually sounded like i just ran over a small girl
I instantly stopped the engine in the middle of the street and jumped out to see who i had hit. this was at 11:30pm and there was no one else around not even a dead body [-o<

so i got back in and went to start it up and it just wouldn't fire but every time it turned over there was a loud scream, so i had the bus towed home.

next day while a friend turned the key i listened to the engine. The distributer was screaming to be let out :?

so i dropped in a spare dizzy and there was no more sounds of torture.

that dizzy went out kicking and screaming

Suggestion:

Go over here and see if getting on Collin's ("Amskeptic") schedule is something you may want to do.

In a day, he can show you how to take care of and drive your bus. Money well spent.

Yep, I have checked out his site and would love to do it. Not sure if he is working on the 2010 itinerary yet or where I will be next year.
