hey ya'll
i have a 1600DP with a 205AJ dist. and a 34 PICT 3 carb. what would my timing need to be set at?
According to old volks home it should be set like this:
Timing Set At:: 5deg ATDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe, vacuum hose(s) connected.
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 9-12deg Adv, 11-13deg Ret; Centrifugal: 6-12deg @ 1500rpm, 22-25deg @ 3800rpm
These settings are for a 1971 VW Bug 1600DP
Should I change anything since I have a bus?
thanks a million for all your help, lyle |

Back to the golden formula, 22-25 + 7.5 base = 28.5-31.5 total mechanical advance @ 3800 RPM. Remove both hoses from the distributor (plug the green retard hose if the engine won't idle) and rev it until the timing mark stops advancing (hint: it'll be around 3800 RPM), move the distributor until the mark stops at 28.5-32.5 (lower is safer), tighten the distributor clamp and reconnect the hoses.
Just for kicks check the timing at idle now and remember it for the next tune up incase you don't want to go through all this again, if it's not at 5 ATDC don't worry, your distributor isn't young anymore. |
