I bought this beetle as a 1973. I'm pretty sure the body and chassis is 73 but I want to know if this is the original engine and what size it is.
The VIN# on the body and chassis match - 1133004492
The number on the engine under the generator - AK 230796
Also there is a WC on the engine case under the distributor.
Thanks |

AK blocks were late 73 early 74 so looks like that maybe the original engine. So unless someone has put bigger pistons/jugs in it then it is a 1600dp. Body number 113 indicates that it is a 1973.

Thanks for the help.
The previous owner put dual carbs on it so I'm not sure if it has had any actual engine work done. If I took off the heads and measured the bore of the jug that should tell me if its stock. Right?
Also can someone tell me what should the inside of the stock jug measure? |

| Are you planning on pulling the engine. It is easier to get the heads off with the engine out on a stand. To pull them with the engine in the car is really a PITA. 85.5mm is stock size. 90.5 mm= 1776 cc, 92 mm =1835 cc 94 mm= 1914 cc |

The engine is already out, I plan on doing a rebuild on this engine what would be a good size to go to 1776 cc 1835 cc or 1914 cc I want a dependable engine with good horsepower.
Thanks again for the help. |

A lot of the guys recommend the 1776cc motor. Routinely get 100,000 miles out of daly driving with enough power to merg into highway traffic. Try this link and see if it helps you out any.
