Hey,
I have a 71' super with a stock engine the guy I bought it from didn't install the engine tin after he rebuilt the engine... I have the complete set but I am wondering how to put it in (with the engine still in the car). I would appreciate any help.
Thx! |

Pull the engine... it's much easier in the long run.

x2 in the car is a nightmare. Probably why the last guy gave up. Pull it out and it will save you hours of frustration and bloody and bruised knuckles.

X3. I tried to remove mine while it was in the car, after about 30 minutes, F*#$ that. It is so easy to just drop the engine out of the thing. Gives you a chance to get everything lined up just right too.

X4 Pull that sucka out!!! You will thank yourself when you are done. Plus the tins help direct air and keep the engine cool. They are not just there to collect dirt and oil. They are an important part of the cooling system. Have to be there!

I'll take it one higher...they are not 'an important part' they ARE the cooling system.
I am a natural born loser who is most likely to drop an ACME safe on his foot, or get a piano dropped on his head.
By just relaxing and going slow and reading Muir's procedure for engine removal (the best aspect of the book) I had my first engine on the ground in 28 minutes flat from the time I started. This was 20 years ago when I was even stupider than I am now, and barely knew which end of a wrench to hold.
If I can do it....anyone can.

I dont think anyone addressed this part of your question . . .the tin goes on in (at least I think) a pretty straightforward manner. I start with the covers for the heads/jugs, then do the back, then the bottom head/jug covers, then the front. It works for me but I am sure its not the only way. There is a site with really nice exploded diagrams of just about everything on the car but I dont have the link. If anyone else has it handy(i think many people are familiar with it) It could help you out too with the order.

Don't forget to put in the little piece that goes between the cylinders on the underside. It has to go in first or you won't be able to get them in later. Also the aftermarket stuff fits like crap (ask me how I know). If you are using it, just accept the fact that you will have to do some creative reshaping.
