The mid-30s is cold from an engine perspective. I live in Phoenix and when I drive to work on the highway in the winter, my thermostat shrinks down, closing the flaps, from the cold air.
It would probably be fine on the city streets with reduced air flow but I have always read the flaps direct the air properly. |

| They aren't necessary. If you don't want to use them, it's no big deal. |

I rest my case.

If you are concerned with Max airflow, consider the following:
Are you racing this turbo-wagen or streeting it?
If its the former, then you have much bigger things to worry about than flaps. And their effect will be negligible. Don't major in the minors.
If you are streeting in, then for longevity sake, you want the flaps.
Our fine Bro. MinamiKotaro runs a racebug with homebrew FI setup. If his priorities are yours, junk the flaps.
It baffles me that people who have not done the research on a subject post not so much to have their head filled with information to make a decision, but merely to verify their prejudices. |

It's a street car. I drove it since 1995 without the flaps, Papaw drove it since he got it in the 70s without the flaps. None of our other Bugs ever had the flaps. The Bus does, though.
Just going by our experience, not putting in the flaps isn't detrimental to an engine. |

well i guess i learned a little bit about the thermo flaps. for the record, that homebrewed efi turbo is exactly what we're building, it'll get hotrodded around more than it'll get driven downtown. thanks all for the input. |

Then the only question is whether they provide noticeable benefit to the directionality of the air flow. IME, not really.
Aren't you engaging in that same kind of speculation? Or do you have technical data to support that statement?
Yes I am (speculating). I was not saying that I knew better or had the data. Just that it should be possible to get data and end/reduce the speculation -- both mine and others. |
