I am looking to replace my swing axle in my 850 lb sand rail. I found one that has many of the parts I want but I am somewhat concerned about the 4.62 gear set it has. Has anyone had any experience with these. Are they any better or worse in reliability than say 4.37. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 850 ish pound 2 seat mid engine buggy, i just put in a pro sand trans with a 4.37 r&p all i can say is that it is geared QUICK with a 31 inch tall tire, i would not go with a 4.62 unless you are ruinning a 33" or 35" just me thoughts though...

I run a 486 in a 3rib in my baja. 235/75, it runs 71 mph on the rev limiter. It is really a 3 spd with a granny gear.

In my experience the 4.62 gave a hell of a lot of low end torque for hill climbing, but limited top end speed. For offroad I fully recommend the 4.62 over the 4.37. Top end speed of 70 mph will cover most applications.

My old hi jumper had a 4.37 and 13.00 xtreme paddles about 28-29 inches tall. stock 1-2 1.713rd 1.43 4th.It worked good at glamis able to use all gears in the dunes. And the spread was very good.Motor was a 1914.
That same trans in my 4 seater needed more motor it did ok was able to hit 3rd in the bowls but i still lacked low end and in the wet dunes last year it struggled in 2nd gear at top of bowls.
I then got an 002 with a 5.37 stock 1-2 and dont know what 3-4 are but are close ratio 3rd is very close to second and 4th feels equal to my last trans a good drop between 3-4 but still ok.This trans was alot better in the dunes for sure esp with headwork.I went to a stu 13.00 about 31 inches tall on my rims and it really helped the ratios. Now with a 2275 i use all 4 gears in the bowls and love it.
Depends on your driving style if i were to do alot of flat ground driving mine wouldnt be so good but for the dunes its right on.I can only go about 45 at 3k rpm in 4th.Can take motor to 7k though  |
