i am redoing the rear end on my sandrail and was thinking of going with 3x2 trailing arms with a coilover conversion kit and was wondering what kind of travel i could expect? any pointers of what to do and what not to do?

thats kinda what i was thinking - i have been looking at coilover conversion kits with the hiem but it seems the only ones i find are the cheap ones , is there better ones out there or are the $150 range good- just seems like thats almost to cheap to have faith in it holding the rearen of your car together?

Advice?

i have 13" of actual travel using torsions.
i know i'm pushing it, but works for now.

is anyone running the cheaper conversion kit? are they having problems, there is a guy here locally that sells the latest rage on for 80 bucks with the cromoly hiems

The Eagle kit actually has a boss that slides into the torsion housing, keeping the load off of the bolts. The cheaper kits just have a bung that the bolt for the heim bolts into. I have seen the cheaper kits fail. the bung that the bolt goes into will break away from the plate. You can take the cheap kit and weld a tube on the back that will slide into the torsion housing, but if you can do that, you might as well just make the whole kit and just buy the heims.

since were on the topic- i am planning on running fox air shocks for now just till i can afford coilovers- would i be better off leaving the torsion alone and just putting good shocks on it or will the air shocks do the trick for now?

Air shocks work fine on the smaller buggies. But you will get better performance from torsions and a good set of shocks. I wouldn't waste money on air shocks if you plan on converting to coilovers.

so i am better off sticking with torsions and good shocks- umm wow i guess i have some decisions to make - i was thinking air shocks might be better but do worry that it may feel like a pogo stick when landing- ummmm

i have everything figured out to a tee of what i want but i have one little thing in the way-- MONEY!!!

I sold some used SAW 28mm torsions to kevin (kbwakesk8) for his chop top 4 seat baja with 3x3s and he says it rides great. So yes, torsion bars will work for smaller oversized arms.
