I think I may be in over my head:
That's a hole rusted in the corner
I know how to do all the rust repair, and I have all the tools. I just took on a car that needs more work then I thought it did when I 1st looked at it. Someone please encourage me. :) |

| I would say do the floors first and get it in driver mode. |

| Floors and channels first, start with a good solid foundation. Nothing a little welding won't take care of. |

Thats the only way to tackle that one. Screw trying to make that a driver first. |

$200 exactly. It's a dec of 66 car. Plans were to make it a driver first but now I'm going do a ground up. Heater channels and floors first. All new brakes all the way around. Then I'll figure it out from there. |

| Well heater channels are ordered and on the way. The project officially begins. Amazingly, none if the metal the channels are welded to are rusted. Just the channels. The inner fender wells are in good shape, the quarters are great, etc. |

| Right on. Please post pictures when doing the heater channels as I am about to do the same thing on my 67 and having never done it before would like to have points of reference while doing it. |

We'll see how brave I am in a few months. I don't think a Bug is as difficult to do channels in as a Ghia, and I did the drivers side in my 74 I sold. I'm going to take my time. I have a running nice Ghia, so there's no hurry. Plus, the budget dictates I take my time.
On a side note I went and bought 4 wheels (stock 66-67) and returned the wheels to the guy I bought it from that were on it. He had borrowed them to tow it home. Also got a front passenger fender and found the grill in a slightly different place then the drivers side. Not sure if I'll cut and move it, or try to find a correct German passenger fender.
I think I may have a package tray I can get by doing some powder coating for a friend of another VW guy I know. I'm going to drive up to Mark1 and buy floors for it some time this week. Then unless I find some more rust hidden somewhere (which is very possible) I'll have everything I need to start welding this poor neglected car.
Right now my plans are to get it solid, possibly primer and paint it, and get the engine in it so it can at least move out of the driveway on it's own power. I hope to have that done by about March. We'll see how well that plan goes. I have a neighbor (the guy who helped me tow it home) who has access to a garage we can paint it in. Not sure if I want to try and do it myself.
I plan to take some more pics of it today. My wife and I had a LONG weekend, and are still recovering. Woke up early to clean up the 72 I sold on Sat, went and got the 67, got home around 730pm on Sat. Then I got no sleep at all Sat night. Woke up at 4am Sun, drove about 200 miles to Jersey to get the wheels and a fender so we could roll it out of the garage and put the Ghia back. Got back to town around 2pm. Stopped at a local VW cruise in and hung out till about 5. Some of the guys at the cruise came back to my place where we worked on the 67 a bit. Swapped the fender and 4 wheels and gave them back to the guy I bought it from. We stopped playing with the car around 10pm. So, that's why I haven't taken too many pics of the work it needs. I just haven't had time. If it's not dark out when I get home, I'll take a bunch and post them up.
I am actually looking forward to the rust repair on this car. This is the 1st rusted car I've ever bought where I actually own all the tools, and the garage to fix it in. Welder, grinder, clecos, butt weld clamps, hammers, dolleys, hole punch, and on and on. Even have an 18" metal brake. |

Well I found the correct steering box bolts today. 10mm x 50mm by 1.5 thread pitch. Thank you Mark1. Had him order me the pans. Got a wiper switch, headlight relay, and correct headlight knob from him too. Ordered all the brake components. This weekend I'm going to start pulling the brakes apart, sandblast the backing plates and powder coat them gloss black. I really need to start making things shiny so I can feel better and like I can get it done.
At least the next time I have to push it the steering wheel will work. |

Sean you ARE a brave man.! 8)
....But I have faith in you .You will learn alot with that one . And nothing will beat the feeling of knowing you did it yourself.....Patience is a virtue!..... Baby steps....baby steps....dont rush anything , But be persistent!
Cant go wrong anyway you go for $200. You could always go euro and swap some sloped back headlights on it also . If you dont want to mess with the horn grills just weld them shut, shave the turn signals and go cal-look .
Make sure you check here before you start:

I have never been a fan of the upright headlights myself . The whole car is nothing but graceful curves and......BAMM!!....headlights!
But its your car and build the way you like. Too many try to fit into the crowd and end up getting lost in it! Have fun with it. |

Here you can see the difference between the 2 fenders.
New to me headlight knob.
Factory grease pencil writing still intact.
Part of the reason I ordered heater channels
Heater channels are that shot, yet look at the inner fender well. |

While I agree, 12v upright headlights with horn grills are part of what makes 67 so unique. That's why I like 67s. They're unique, yet still retain the early Beetle classic styling. |
