i just bought a 78 westy that came with the childs cot. i tried to set it up but the steel bars seen to be about 2" short. is is from an older van?

76 to 79 cot bars are 2 piece collapsible.
They would measure 57 1/4" when hooked on the half moons.

67 and back bars are round and black, front one is 47" and the rear is 55 1/4".
68 to 73 are 56 1/4" long. 68/early 69 were round and black. They bend easily.... VW then made them 3 sided and galvanized.
74/75 are 57 1/4" long.

The difference in the length of bay bars is because of where they store.
68-73 were on top of the rear side cabinet.
74-75 were under the full length rear seat.
76-79 were under the 3/4 rear seat.

i guess i do have the older cot, mine is the 3 sided
galvanized bar type, it is too short. looks like i will have to trade....

Good luck finding the 76-79 collapsible bars!
Even though the 57 1/4" bars were only made 74/75, I find them easier than the later ones.

it can't be as hard as finding a relatively rust free bus in canada!

Ok I want to discuss furthor if we could. I did read that the cots are different lengths due to where they are stored? Realy?

In my old 68 if I recall the half moons were in relativly the same place as on my 77. So why does it seem like the cab of my 77 is wider? even if the placement moves up to accomodate the earlier bars-the cab dosent look like it curves in that fast?

I did find the telescoping correct ones-paid good $ too. I hope they dont get lost in transit :?

I think it has something to do with the head rest on the later bays.

So I looked back on some pics I have of the two. It looks like the early is mounted 1-2 in higher making it more narrow. The late sits lower.

I did know the head rests need to come off prior to use-but they have no effect on the width of the cab and or positioning of the half moons.

See

OOoops, you're right, but the cabs are still the same widths.

It was playin with my mind. I needed to see the pics myself :?

But anyway I did luck out with the purchase of the right cot  ill post up some pics when it gets here.

I would show you the cot mounted in my 79 but it just dosen't fit right anymore.

MOX Wed Jun 30, 2010 5:57 am

my 77 came with a cot and poles but they were too short, i picked up another cot and poles at a swap meet and was able to test fit while i was there!
so:
- the longer poles fit my 77 westy-but don't fit for storage.
-shorter ones i heard are for early 70's,pre headrest maybe?
but there is also a few years with adjustable poles so they fit in the storage area under the bed.

is there a guide or writeup anywhere that explains where you need to mount the receivers based on which poles you have, for those who don't have existing mounts in their vans but have the cot?
