View original topic: Matching Type 4 motor with 3 rib. And other questions.

I currently have a type 1 mated to a 3 rib. Can I use the existing flywheel and starter on the Type 4? Anything I should look out for. I'm going to ditch the fuel injection for dual carbs. Which is easier to setup? What about cooling? If it fits is the stock tin ok to use on a buggy?

THnaks.

Motor hanging from lift. :D

depends on what year car the type 4 came out of . gonna need a 215 or 210 or 200 conversion flywheel.

wait, is a 3 rib a type 1 bus engine? if so you deffinatly need a conversion flywheel, which is a type 4 flywheel with the center opened up to accept a needle bearing. your old starter will work.

To to clarify, its a 1970 411 that the motor came out of.

you might have gotten really lucky, that flywheel may fit a 200 mm clutch disk, identical to what is on your bug. I would check it.

Even if flywheel is the right dia. dont forget that the pilot bearing needs to be moved to the flywheel, otherwise the transaxel input shaft will not reach the pilot bearing. when i had the flywheel surfaced they also machined the center hole to accept the pilot bearing to press or drive into place. should have got a pic. you can run without this mod but it will eat input shaft seals. with no pilot only the clutch disk engauges the input shaft.

guys, its a T4 motor, so it is already designed to fit a bus tranny. The only question is the input shaft length on the tranny. If you put the motor on the tranny and it clunks before the motor is seated all the way, take it back off and cut the input shaft down.
