So I have a baja with a '72 dual port 1600 in it with upswept aftermarket exhaust. The other day I started it up and the set screw that holds the muffler/spark arrestor in, had fallen out causing it to nearly shoot out of the stinger I replaced the set screw and started it back up it seemed to be fine but on the freeway I noticed it seemed to flatten out at about 60mph when befor I was able to reach 70-75mph relatively easy. After getting off the freeway i pushed in the clutch to brake for a stop light and the car died once I started it back up I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. The next day the muffler/spark arrester again popped loose while getting onto the freeway and the car started running like crap until it eventually decelerated to the point that I had to pull over and get a tow. So now I have the muffler held in with two nuts with lock washers since I didnt learn the first time. The car now seems to run fine however i have not had time to test it extensively and was wondering if there was anything else I should check before getting stranded again on the side of the damn freeway. Any help is appreciated as my baja has become my daily driver. Thanks.

my baja story is simular but different. i was running a straight pipe. i was fouling plugs every other week and had a bad intake icing problem. after baffling the exhaust the icing problem went away and no more plug fouling. first time after baffling, i noticed that the idle was way up and i readjusted the carb. i came to the conclusion that the hot exhaust didnt have time to warm the intake which caused the icing problem, which my carb was set to rich to run, which was dumping extra fuel down the intake, which was causing my fuel fouled plugs. the other day my baffle came out and the car began to run stupid. after reinstalling, it went back to normal. people say they run straight pipes and that my theory is wrong but i believe the carb needs to set different.
