I guess aloting 15 minutes to replace the passenger rear glass seal in a 69 Westy was wishful thinking ! Oh yeah, you need to pull 1/2 the interior out first !

Just one more reason to not be driving around with all that crap in a bus...

At least you get to do it in a nice dry garage instead of a nice wet street. :)

I hope that seal is better than the WCM stuff that I've gotten lately... If not, be prepared to do it again inside of a year.

I completely redid a '57 Single Cab over last winter/ spring.

I'd used WCM stuff in the past with no issues- great stuff actually- but it's probably been seven years or better.

Ordered all seals from WCM thru my local supplier. Assembled all the rubber stuff in April. Finally rolled the completed truck out of the shop in August.

After three days in the sun, all of the drop gate bumpers were splitting and blistering. Replaced them with the CORRECT bump stops from WW. A couple of those were slightly blistered right out of the package, but they're holding up so far. We'll see.

The quarter window seals are already drastically shrunken. The seals that go between the window assembly and the door body are beginning to shrink also.

The front windshields are starting to leak already. One of them fit great, the other one needed black silicone adhesive in two corners to make it "form".

I'm probably going to wind up doing this all over again next spring. This is just unbelievable. I've talked to others who are experiencing the same quality issues. Seems to be a recent thing.

we have been extremely happy with the OeVeeDub German seals. Expensive but they look good and fit well too.

Man you never seem to know whats worth a shit and whats not. I got some turn signal lens seals for my 69 from CIP1 thay were junk in 2 month's then I got a windshild seal from them it was 28.00 and it was greman it has been in all summer and looks as new so who knows what your going to get from these guys. Oh and CIP1 said thay were going to send replacements for the bad seals none ever came. so far the side window seals I got from them last year and thay were WCM seal's so far look as new. So far the rear door seal I got is as new been in for a year I hope it holds up its german and cost 100.00

Expense isn't an issue. I went with WCM because, as I said, they never had these issues in the past. Yep, all OE German is going on it next time. I absolutely hate doing things more than once.

You don't have to remove the whole wardrobe to get at the window seal (meaning removing EVERY Westy bit). I recently replaced my entire rear right window in my 71 Westy, with one that had a useable OG gasket on it (in New England, cars rust, but window rubber survives intact).

All I had to do was remove the headbanger shelf, remove the rearmost mounting bolt for the large cabinet, and then get a small screwdriver in there to remove the piece of curtained panelling blocking the window. Taking out the shelf and the rear bolt give you a little room to work the cabinet around to take the curtained panel out.

Of course, it also helped that I was able to take the panel right out the window hole (it might prove to be more difficult to put in through the wardrobe, but I'm not there yet). Once the panelling was out, I had enough room to work the window/gasket in as one unit, using the super soapy piece of clothesline method.

I know it looked doable w/o removing the camper pieces but I wanted to clean up everything inside so it was coming out sooner or later !

bigbore Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:55 pm

With all that hassle to do it that way the wardrobe isn't that hard to remove.

-THE bumpers are US made and i dont see what went wrong, maybe not enough rubber in the mix.
-the vents which i think you call quarters are Brazilian and bound to shrink, dont think there is a Synthetic source or German.
-the windshield are usually good as ive them used them many times and my buddy has a set still after 3 years that look good. WCM has a lifetime warranty on the rubber they make and if you distributor wanted to call and get it changed out, that's no problem.

but if they make a crappy seal then they will change it out for more of the same crap. sounds very much like the GEX guarantee- where the cost to you of the return shipping isnt worth their replacement.

I really, really, really don't want to do this every frikkin' year. GEX might have a lifetime warranty, also. But what does it really mean?

It's too bad, but something is going wrong there. I'm not the only one who has had issues like this. like I said, I've used their stuff LOTS in the past and have been very happy.

Here's a review I did of their QA on their standard dash pad.

Unfortunately, when I tried to get their attention about this, I got the brush off. Since then, I've tried to avoid their product unless they are the ONLY source.
