I just replaced my voltage regulator after the ground on my generator came loose and welded the points together. After i fired it up the gen light went out so i took it for a test spin in wich the light came back on less than a block away. Any one have any Ideas as to what it could be now?

Disconnect the wires to the generator and test the generator output at 2000 rpm with a voltmeter (do a Search here for instructions, I think Speedy Jim has posted those). If generator tests OK, then it's your regulator (even new).

Did you follow the instructions that came with the new voltage regulator?

I know with a lot of them you are supposed to get a little scrap of wire to properly polarize the unit. Check the instructions and if you can, it may be worth returning the unit to the auto parts store and getting a new one.

when I start my car, my gen light is on for a second or two then goes off, is there anything to be concerned with that?

I found speedy jims generator test web page I checked at the battery with the car running and only got 12.23 on the volt meter. He mentions that the brushes can be too worn to apply proper pressure how do i tell if my brushes are too worn? I pressed on the brushes while the car was running but the light remains on.

Yes, you need a complete engine rebuild. Don't drive it anymore. Have it towed to your nearest Lube 'n Tune.

YIKES! Am I glad I had on my newer shoes and didn't step into any dog crap before I stuck one of them into my craw. IB(Imperial Beach?)James, I honestly thought you were joking and pulling our legs. I thought you meant your light comes on when you turn on the key, as it always does in all cars, but I guess you meant after your car starts. Far be it from me to make fun of someone's serious question. I post "goofy noise" and "weird electrical problem" posts regularly, and I would be pissed too if someone made fun of one of my serious (to me) questions.

People here have spent countless amounts of their time patiently helping me and I really appreciate it, so I apologize for my error in judgment. #-o
