I picked up an almost rust-free 1977 Standard with an unusual engine number.
It's 107598 with no letter prefix. Another different item is that it has had a carb for more than 20 years. Plus it's titled as a Super Beetle.

Anyway, Hello, and any ideas about the engine?

Tom

May simply be a restamped replacement engine case. Can you post or send me some pictures of the engine?

Sure, I'll take some picture in the light and post them tomorrow. Thanks for your interest.

Hiya Tom,

Yep, that's a tad unusual. If you're running a dual port engine (and you should be) that number should be preceeded by two alpha characters like AJ.

An engine from the 77 production year should be an FI. You might want to check and see if you are running an electric fuel pump. An FI case will not have a provision for a mechanical fuel pump as the earlier carbed engine cases did.

Well, I wouldn't let that throw you. There are a lot of folks (some with VW experience) who think that all Bugs were SuperBeetles after 1970.

It does have an electric fuel pump. I haven't found it yet, but I can hear it ticking.

I'm wondering if the case might be one from Mexico or Brazil.

No. More likely as DrDarby said.

While that is a definite possibility it would still not offer a ready explanation for that number of yours.

Hey I have a 77 standard, too. What color is yours - I think they only came in blue, silver or brown. Can't wait to see the pictures. Post lots of them!

Your fuel pump should be mounted under the gas tank up front. Sounds liek when whoever replaced the motor 20 years ago swapped the FI for a carb.

Post some pictures for more insight.

Oops, my bad.

There is a letter prefix before the numerals. A J 107 598.

Thanks for the interest and when I find the wire to upload photos
to my computer, I'll post them.

Thank again.
