Gonna need some pics, is the oil cooler mounted off to the left side of the pulley end or sticking up from the middle of the case?

Hey Thanks for the responce. The oil cooler looks to be in the stock location, off to the left of the pulley. The guy who owns it wants me to buy it and a 1.7 case some heads and rods... I will only if this case is something usable to me. Is there an internal difference betweem the 1.7/1.8 and 2.0's? Talking about the case only.. I will be looking for a 71mm stroke crank to fit into it if I can use it. New to the type 2/4 not to the type 1. Thanks Dave T

All T4 powered buses used essentially the same case. Any will take the 71mm crank and rods, and can use standard 94 mm jugs.

I would highly doubt the "engine code" numbers are "gone", as they are stamped well into the case. The number you posted is an engine case cast, showing the Part # of the case located by the pushrod tubes ...each side will have one....it's a T4 case that could be any size...

Maybe you should get a gas/solvent soaked rag and look better?

Could be a replacement case or a VW reman, they only had a gold sticker with a # on most of them.

Yup no numbers by the oil breather. There is some blue ink there but if someone ground down the numbers they left a ridge where the numbers would be. A replacment case sounds about right. I had a universal case for a type 3 once that had the U code stamped into it. Good to see that all the cases will take the 71mm crank. I think I will pick it up. Thanks Dave T
