71 super beetle 1600 cc came with a 34 pict 3 carb and an 009 distributor. I rebuilt the carb and cleaned every port and hole I could find on it. I didnt over tighten the jets. Replaced wires, plugs, dist, etc. I set the fast "idle" per every instruction i have found which was either back it out all the way, then let it just touch the choke cam (choke in open position) and then give it a 1/4 turn then forget it. I set the control screw at 2.5 turns, tried three turns. I set the bypass screw in the same spot. Started it up, runs and idles fine until warmed up and then wont idle at all. If i choke it with my hand it will run. I have backed out the bypass screw nearly all the way and tried every spot between there and in all the way with little or no change. By backing out the volume control screw to somewhere way more than three turns it can almost idle. Well after much head scratching and hair yanking i find out the 34 pict 3 and the 009 dont like each other. Before laying out money to replace one or both parts is there a way to make them sort of be happy together?

I did come across this web site. Im not sure if this is a viable option or not, but I am willing to try it if anyone is familiar with the technique.

The 34PICT-3 was designed to be used with a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor. Why not get the "correct" distributor instead of trying to make it work with a OO9?

Try the tips in these two threads...

You have a vacuum leak like shanester suggests. Spray some carb cleaner around possible leak spots while the engine is running. When the rpms change, you've found you'd leak.

Just my two cents....I had the same idle problem with mine. It was a cheap Bocar 34 pict 3. I tried soaking it, blowing it out, and finally rebuilding it with no luck. I finally broke down and purchased a rebuilt Solex carb and it worked right out of the box with no adjustment!

I too, also have the 009 distributor on my bug and I will tell you that the 009 sucks! I have flat spots like crazy! Before I pull my bug back out the garage in the spring I am going to buy the correct Bosch DVDA distributor and put on it.

I'm sure you've found this resource - but here it is:

I just pulled the 009 distributor from my '69 Baja and installed a electronic distributor and coil. It made a big difference in the way that it ran.

whille running. hold your hand on the carb. wait till its about to die and then take your hang off. whatever is stuck in the carb will shoot out.

had the same prob and asked a vw mechanic.

So what is the best coil? I have a vacum advance type dist. (JFU4 043 905 205). It is a used Bosch/VW with a new vacum unit. I have installed pertronix module 1847V, in this little guy. I am using a 34 pict 3. I am currently still using the coil that came with the car when I bought it, used mystery coil. So should I follow logic and go with the FlameThrower coil? What about coil resistance?

Having the same problems... have the 009... what distributor should I switch it out for?

How do we feel about the Pertronix Distributor?

A 34 PICT-3 was designed to run with an SVDA.

Actually that's not really correct.

34 pict -3 was first designed and used with DVDA distributors. Only near the end of 73 year model and into 74 ( USA spec, and later world production) did they change to SVDA and there are some minor differences in the carbs that need to be considered when matching up a distributor. Just sticking a new Mexican Bosch or Chinese made SVDA on the wrong flange # carb may not yield the perfect results people think.

(notice how many on the chart are for DVDA and have the 5 ATDC timing spec VS the SVDA and 7.5)?

Speaking of GERMAN carbs here. The aftermarket/replacment what ever you want to call them Bocar and other carbs were re tooled to allegedly work with DVDA or SVDA, or mechanical only. But often they can't do that out of the box either without some tweaking.
