I have done this on many vehicles I have owned over the years and it usually makes a noticeable difference in the cranking speed. Cables need replacing occasionally any way due to corrosion and insulation failure. It probably won't cost him an extra ten spot to go to a size larger cable if and when replacement is warranted. |

Great, those sound like some good places to start searching. I am going to pick up a new battery ground and would like to also replace the tranny ground so i know for sure that is not the issue, but is that something that i can find at my local auto shop? or a bit more specific to the VW? Can i make one out of something they might have? or is it better to order the om part?
Im glad you guys are here to help break my dependence on my local mechanic! |

While you are getting a new battery and grounds, also get a new POSITIVE cable. Getting the juice moving out of the battery to start with can be as important as bringing it back.
Sounds like you are on the right track. |

Get a regular battery cable with the eyelets on each end. The other main concern is getting all the connections in wonderful clean shape. Coat the clean connections with dialectric grease or the battery terminal goop. It will keep them in good shape preventing corrosion. |

I agree. I would do as many have suggested and check all of your cables and connections, which may help. But it sounds like there is trouble in the starter/solenoid to me.
Why?
Because electrical resistance Isn't significantly higher at the temps that are a problem. In some metals it is slightly lower. Batteries tend to put out less current when cold. But since you've got a new 800cca battery, I doubt that's the culprit.
Mechanical resistance on the other hand tends to be greater at low temps. Viscosity of lubricants increases, tolerances decrease and any moisure in the works becomes solid below 32*F.
I would try what SGKent suggests and if it doesn't work consider rebuilding or replacing the started.
For the record. I am in the camp that likes to run a starter relay. I won't go into that now. You can do a search and find more info and lots of opinions. |

| I had a hot start problem with my solenoid about 16-17 years ago. Removed the solenoid and lubed it with something, I don't remember what, but it worked fine after that. |

I don't think it was mentioned if the battery is new but yea..
sensimilla said the starter "clicks" and he has lights just no turning over.
Frozen starter or current problems I would assume. Good replys from everyone
Relay would be good just to have either way so current doesn't have to go all the way to the front of the bus then back to the starter |

| Like has been discussed 100 times before, short between the starter terminals. Real quick you can find out which direction to head to get the problem resolved. |
