I recently purchased a 71 beetle (first year for the "fat chick"?LOL) and anyway I really wanted a standard bug. This one is so sweet though....all og and solid. The old dude I got her from restores old chevy's and has a full blown shop. It sat in his paint booth for almost 10 years and it was a friend of his stupidity that got the car to his place.(his buddy drove it with no belt for quite a bit and it died there) He put a crate motor in it and couldn't get it tuned right due to not caring enough about vw's to research any thing about getting it just right and put it up for sale cause he needed the booth back up and running. I timed the car and changed the oil, bled the brakes and drove it home 32 miles. The cobwebs about choked me out!!!LOL..But to the point of the post...I am a true aircooled vw lover and have been pretty much all my life. I am on a very low "hobby" budget and am wondering if my car is worth trading (maybe with a little cash) for a 64-69 bug, with solid floors and a daily driver like mine. I want to restore one for a good daily but not a show car....Does anyone think I have a shot or am I just dreaming cause I have a "fat chick"? I'll post pic's in a few....once i figure out how....
thanks for any input in helping me

| Well, 68 and 69s are still termed Fat Chicks. I don't get why nobody wants them... :?: But, it's all personal choice. Which do you like better? If that one checks out mechanically and isn't very rusty I wouldn't bother personally because the one you trade it for may not be as nice |

| I have alot of appreciation for all years....It's a stronger love for the older cars Iguess.....I always had beetles and only had one standard...it was my favorite out of them all. |

Clean up the '71, put the bumpers back on, make it look as good as you can, and sell it. With that money, you can then look for an earlier car. One thing to consider, for the money you'll get for the super, you probably won't be able to find an earlier car in similar shape for the same money.

In terms of a "trade" that you wonder about, it may be a slim chance. While some people like "any" year, there seems to be a large group that wants either an earlier model or a so-called fat chick.
Best bet will be to clean-up what you have as much as possible and sell it.
Then put the proceeds (and probably some extra $$) towards the model you really want.
But be careful not to start dumping $$ into the current one to make it "better" for a sale. |

I hear ya guy's..That's what I was wanting to know....some people would pay 2000.. where others wouldn't even bother looking at her. The bumpers are in good shape....going back on car with the for sale sign..

| Everyone's different, I personally wanted a 71-72 early Superbeetle, I prefer the strut front end, bigger trunk, etc...to each his own...these days, any good condition Beetle of any year or type is desirable to some one. But a good clean rust free pre-70 with good mechanicals will probably cost you way more than you can get for that car, like in the $6000-7000 range if its truely nice and rust free.... |

I've owned both styles (pre and post '67), and I think the later cars make better daily-drivers. Better heat, a bit better visibility, better lights and seat belts, slightly cheaper parts, and you can still find some fat chicks in the junkyards.
Like you, I'm a bigger fan of standards, and my '68 feels like the best of both worlds. Still got a swingaxle (with a z-bar) and a torsion-bar front end, but no more kingpins! And the 1500 is a nice mix of relative power and economy.
The old cars look pretty sweet, though. Love the big-lenses, the longer lids, the five-lugs... However, the bulk of the world has no idea that there's any difference, and could care less about various styling changes. They just see a bug.
Your car, your choice. Either way, it's an air-cooled! |

This is, I think, the most useful piece of advice here . . .unless you want us to tell you what kind of VW you would rather have.
I would happily trade my car, lose money, and get into a car that needed more work if it what I was trading for was what I really wanted. |

I think this is good advice also. I was so excited to see the condition of this car I had to have it. It was a hasty purchase, out of my price range a little, but soooooo worth it, my ADHD kicked in and that was it!! I am not unhappy by any means. I Just have had that "perfect dream ride" in my head for a long time that I am still looking for....they are out there in my range of $$, Just gotta see....This ol'girl has a good home now with lot's of time for attention and that's what she'll get till the dream ride roll's up!
You guy's all have sweet rides and I wish all the best for you and your rides..hope I can help in the future with the same Iv'e gotten here..
thanks again
