i have a 74 without heater ducts, i was worried about the defrost not working so great but i got a chance to drive around a 72 or 73 with the heater ducts and the defrost and the defrost worked almost as well as mine. took about fifteen minutes to get the windows not foggy.
is this specific to this vehicle or are all old vw's like this and i shouldn't worry about it? |

| Welcome to our world. In the "Great Pacific North Wet" as I like to call home, I carry a sham-wow with me wherever I go. it's quicker than waiting the 15 min (or more ) to see clearly. |

For the defroster to work properly, the whole heating system needs to be hooked up and sealed properly. Chances are the other car you drove in didn't have everything hooked up well. It's efficiency is based on alot of factors. Outside temps, humidity, your body temp, and even your body size. If you are concerned about having a good operation defroster, you need to spend sometime to make sure everything is hooked up and sealed including the engine seals and weatherstripping around your doors.

Beetles are not as good as watercoolers when it comes to defrosting. At least in town traffic. When you get on the highway and start moving they work great. But then again how many of us live right next to the interstate.
Keeping your fresh air fan in good working order and duct work in good shape will help. I notices a major difference in fogging windows when I got mine hooked up. But still not a huge difference in melting frost.
Here's a tip. When you start driving. Don't turn on the heater (pulling the leaver) until you are 5 minutes into the drive. The reason is at night water vapor sits inside your heater exchange boxes. If you open heater rings away, it will be like having four heavy breathers inside the car with you. Your windows will fog up faster. |
